I have been a lurker forever, but never posted on this board.

Here is a song I recorded on a Roland 2480. It was mixed, with much assistance from a friend on Logic.

Let me know what you think if you have time.

Thanks!

I really liked the bass sound. Real good low end to the song. Generally a nice ambience to the song. I rather liked it. The voices blended well.

Now there are lots of small performance things going on. There are quite a few timing issues with the brass section. The same goes for the vocals. To a lesser extent, some guitars have some timing issues.

As an example listen to the intro. Lots of little spots where the rhythm section and the brass are off. For the vocals, listen to the first couple of lines - the voices are out of sync in small spots. Some pitchiness in the low harmony part (listen around 1:00).

Interesting sounds during the guitar solo begining at 1:50. But they're real abrasive and it's clipping like crazy.

The song is probably longer than it needs to be. That's quite a long outro.

I'm pointing out lots of issues. But I think the song is, musically at least, good. You have a real BIG sound working too. BTW - you're pegging the meters thoughout, gotta watch that.

All in all, I still liked it. Trip...

Cool-Like the ska vibe-I would kill to have a horn section at my disposal-are they real?? You can never be sure these days...No complaints to speak of really-the mix seems overly busy with background noises even though they are intentional the effect is like a sonic onslaught. I would have gone for a little more dynamics myself, but these are just my opinions. This is a real good sounding song and mix-just lay off the limiter a bit! Sounds like a good live band where you guys from?

Hmm... rock with horns , lead vocals with both female and male, a screaming guitar solo (with backing horns). I have to tell you, these are 3 things very uncommon. You may want to try a vocal structure where the leads take turns singing a line. It might make the vocals more up front and stand out. The song in my opinion was over when it slowed down, but you decided to push it up till 6:00 minutes?!? Why? I can't say the song pulled me in, actually with all the variety of "sounds" you're throwing at the listener, this could be a distraction. Things seemed to be clashing for lack of a better description. The song starts out with a good groove going, but as soon as you start throwing everything at the listener you risk confusing them and losing their attention.

thanks for the comments

OK, thanks everyone for the comments...

Triple M:

Yes I agree with you the brass could be tighter. It was REALLY a mess before we hit it with auto tune and compression. All over the place. Unfortunately we don't have a "crack horn section" as actual members. These were actually friends, who volunteered their time on a Saturday...no pay...They had never heard the song before or played together before, so it was not the greatest performance to "tape"

As far as the vocals not being in sync...done intentionally. Have had comments both ways, people who like it and people who don't.

Clipping...you should hear some of my other recordings :)...

Pegging the meters...man, alot of my recordings turn out like that, and I really don't intend them to, even when I think I'm being careful. Probably from years of 4-tracking and trying to get everything as hot as possible.

Stratomaster--thanks--yes real horns.

We are from Erie PA.

Yes, the mix is busy, most of our songs our busy.

Homeuser--we have gotten alot of feedback that the song is too long. We even had a rough "radio mix" without the outro but in the end went with this mix (it is coming out on a compilation).

The band runs the gamut of 2 minute pop songs to 10 minute feedback jams, with a lot in between.

I listen to a lot of "noise rock" or experimental stuff and it's funny, while mixing, I actually thought the mix may be too conservative, but I think more people have your opinion.

As far as the alternating vocals...yes, this is a "staple" of a lot of our other songs.

Thanks for all your feedback and for even listening.
