I'm a bit of a newbie to the PC DAW recording thing but I've recorded quite a few tracks now of a friend of mine who writes and plays his own songs. I thought I'd post a link to my webpage where you can download some of them and ask for the general opinion and any helpful hints people might have.

http://www.foo.co.nz/audio/MarkHumpage.html

This was done at home with a combination of DI and an Audix OM3xb. Sonar to mix and Cooledit to bump up the volume when I'm done. (I always end up exporting to .wav from sonar about 3db quieter than I want, can't seem to fix it).

I'm using a charming SBLive! DE and Yamaha YMF724 with a Behringer Eurorack 802A mixer that I modified to have direct outs (post fader) from all the channels. That lets me record four mono channels simultaneously though I don't do it all that often.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. What I'm trying to achieve is a clean natural sound as that is the way it is performed.

Thanks

The electric guitar solos make this piece catchy and quite good, subject matter relatable and honest.Good Show.Production is decent not crazy about the guitar tone, i like a richer acoustic sound,a nice deep hollow body richness would give it the depth it need IMO

The guitar is a problem. It's a mix of a DI and single mic to try and keep the clarity needed for the music and a bit of the warmth from the live aspect. I have trouble getting it to not be too boomy so I've probably gone the other way.

Maybe I need to try a different way of mic'ing the guitar, stereo mics?

Not bad at all...But you're right about the acoustic tone...it kinda' peels your eyebrows off after awhile.

There's a tune you need to check out by another member of this BBS ("Guernica"). http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1552&alid=-1

It's called "Miracles," and he got an absolutely KILLER acoustic tone by using the process that you used here (mic and DI). I record a lot of acoustics too, but I never have been able to get a decent tone using the DI/mic method. I've done some stereo mic'ing, but it honestly works best for me when I just use one mic and spend a decent amount of time moving the mic around until it sounds good in the cans. BTW - One of the acoustic gits I record a lot with is a Larrivee Rosewood (very VERY boomy guitar), and I find that pointing the mic at about the middle of the neck cuts out a lot of the muddy frequencies...I've never seen anybody else recommend this, but if the guitar is REALLY boomy, it works. The git on this one does need some more lows, and more of the mic signal than the DI, I think.

Anyway, nice toon...good luck,
Chris

Were you listening to a particular track? I've tried several different eq's of the guitar over the four tracks on my server and some of them are better than others.

I`ll get ya tune ASAP. I`m on real-slow 56k so I have to ration time for downloading.
:)

Thanks Toki.

Chris, that is an amazing Guitar sound, extremely crisp and live feeling. How was it done? is it panned out left and right or what...

My summertime has some of that feeling but it's not anything like as clear.

That lead has a definite Santana/latino feel and works well with the rest of the pseudo-reggae... maybe bring the initial lead part down a tad, came in a little loud, but sounds right when accompaning the vocals at the end.

I liked the production quality, no gripes there... everything was clear and balanced.

Wow, thanks pinky. These are the first four tracks that I've done all myself (ie not used a pre-done backing track with recorded vox over the top).

I only started this 3 months ago as a hobby and sort of to help out my girlfriend but it's a hell of a lot of fun. All I need now is $100,000 and enough time to buy some real gear.

Have a look at www.foo.co.nz/audio for some other bits and pieces that I've done, most of the rest is not as musically nice as Marks stuff. The thing I'm most proud of is actually hacking my mixer to have the direct outs.

Mark is doing ten or so tracks so I'll have more to put up in a couple of weeks I think.

Thanks again

:D ......welcome to our hell!! :D :D

....Hey Chiascuro,
Chris turned me on to your stuff, and im glad he did... very cool. I listened to 2 faced girl. Very cool vibe and rhythm. I liked it alot. I didnt find the guitar tone as offensive as it sounds like you did. It's a little bright and thin.... but not horrible. On the song Chris mentioned (Miracles), I recorded the acoustic DI and mic'ed, panned 20/20 (about 10 and 2). Im trying to recall the effects that i used on the di side..... I compressed it pretty hard, used some verb.....and possibly just a touch of chorus to take off that piezo bite.... cant remember exactly though....sorry. On the mic side.... I used a really shitty AT dynamic mic, a touch of compression and verb.... Im notorious for not keeping records of my track settings......... (bad toad). I wish i could help ya more.

Very cool tune though..... Im looking forward to hearing more..... welcome:)

two faced girl

very nice song. i love it! very tight rythm. good groove. excellent.

now go get some condensors and mic that guitar. forget the direct. it really kills the tone. i remember g's direct acoustic being the only one i ever liked but there were other things going on too. with this song the guitar is right out there naked so you should just mic it imo.

some percussion would be nice too. not a drumset. handpercussion. just a thought.

thanks for posting that.
