Hey fellas. This is my first post @ hr.com

I have a question, maybe you can help me deciede on something.

I have a triton rack and a fantom xr, i had thought of purchasing a motif es keyboard due to pressure from clients, but a friend of mine is selling her access tabletop and her nord 2x tabletop for a decent price @ $1100.00.

Its about the same price as a motif rack es new.

I have played numerous analog synths in the past and I want to get into these virtual analog modeling ones. I've heard the stuff she can do with the nord and the access, which to me is just absolutely wonderful, and I was wondering if I should just purchase the two of them while the gettings good so to speak.

I havent played with the motif es at all. my clients are asking me to purchase one. But I feel that between my fantom and triton, there is no need for a motif. I mean, is there anything way different from the motif that my fantom and triton cant do? Clients say that they like the drums in the motif.

Please someone help me. Our project studio doesnt have one virtual analog synth at all, and I'd much rather purchase something we "NEED" vs something people "want." Know what I mean?

What would you do? Satisfy clients or purchase what you really need?

Mychelle

Satisfying your clients needs would seem rather important if they are paying you to use your studio. I would buy what is needed to keep the clients business, and maybe use the income they provide to make further purchases later.

You would have to explain this. Clients "pressuring you"? Are they willing to pay for the keyboard? Are they mega clients?

Well, my clients are not so famous, well yet, but they are working with a producer that is big.

She has 2 producers. One whom I am asked not to discuss on the net, and myself. I can say he is very well known, and respected.

I have been producing hiphop since 1993 and starting to be known a bit, nothing big, but I have fun at what I do and I do it well. Being a white woman producing hiphop & r&b is something by itsself, and it took alot to get respect from people in the industry.

My studio is mostly a instrumental midi studio. We (husband and myself) have alot of gear, and had alot of gear.

AKAI S2800, S3000XL, ENSONIQ MR-RACK, JV-880, JV-90, JD-990, JV-1080, JW-50, S-330 (W/RC-100), MC-303, QSR, DMPRO, M1 RACK UNIT, YAMAHA TG-77, YAMAHA TG-500, YAMAHA TX81Z, YAMAHA S80, now recently a fantom xr rack, triton rack, oh a jp-8080, and forgive me if I am forgetting anything.

I just went ahead and bought the access virus classic from her. I couldnt pass it up. Bought it for $600 from my friend. She is purchased an Access TI tabletop.

I passed on the Nord 2X. I dont think I need it. I already have a JP-8080 and I might buy a Korg ms-2000. Im not sure on that one yet.

I dont feel there is any genre of music I cant create with our equipment we have. I should elaborate I suppoese, I just purchased the Mr-Rack. Ive heard it before, and I love it. Nice dirty ensoniq sounds.

I doubt you need another synth, frankly.

You could always hire another synth (Yamaha ES) for a specific project. Some of the rack mount Motif units had latency / processor issues, so check before you buy.

Motif

I'm a Kurzweil person all the way, but my friend has a Motif and I love some of the sounds on it. He has a ROM pipe organ sound that is just incredible.

And they know how to make a Saw tooth lead sounds very much alive, and punchy.

But he does not like the sequencer in it. It is too much headache to try and arrange all the things and then play live over it, he says.

Thats a steal, buy them, flip on ebay, get whatever you want

It's kind of like having Logic and nuendo and having customers insist on Pro Tools. You just gotta decide if the bang for the buck is there on the motif.

If no one is insisting on the Triton or Fantom, you might consider replacing one of those with the Motif. But one analog or digilog is a real good idea. I think you made a good call getting the access.

Sounds like quite a collection of Roland digitals there...

People use our Fantom XR and Triton quite a bit.

We use the sampler on the Triton exclusively. It's actually replaced our Akai S2800.

Even our 1080 still gets used alot also.

AFTER looking at your list of equipment,Im thinking (OUTSIDE OF Clients REQUESTS) that you need an analog machine and would benefit and be most happy. The access and nord are cool...but I highly recommend you look into a studio electronics SE1 or ATC....buying a used SE1 wich then for about 300 can be upgraded to the SE1X.I had the voyager and thats also a worthy piece. The ms2000 is a good piece..nothing like the atc or se1...more like the jp8080....I had the ms2000 and have a jp8000 currently
