So i am a newbie - better start with that. I am not actually looking to do any serious digital recordings with my PC, rather, i am looking for a very simple to use, inexpensive tool, that will allow me to mix some digital tracks together (wav, mp3 whatever) and allow me to do some remote song writing with the other members of the band. For instance... I want to be able to record a guitar track, email it to my bass player, have him add his piece, send it back to me... you get the idea. I know i can use the windows sound recorder to record the first track, but my bass player needs some software to add his piece. Can anyone recommend some cheap and intuitive software for this application? Also, will any duplex sound card do - is the difference one of quality or features? <--- can of worms there i bet eh? Thanks.

Do you both have a broadband connection? You want to work in a relatively uncompressed audio format (WAV,AIFF) and not MP3 to retain quality. That means huge file sizes (40Mb versus 4Mb for 4 minutes of music).

If not, working over the Internet will be very painfull.

Define inexpensive.

Bandwidth should not be an issue. Wavs are doable - is there nothing that will work with MP3? Like i said, quality is not really a big issue - i just want a song writing tool. As for cost i would consider around the $100 cheap.
