Looking for a S/PDIF mixer and/or converter

Hello,

I'll be picking up an Audiophile 2496 soon, and I was wondering what I can connect to the S/PDIF 'in' port? Are there any inexpensive mixers or some kind of analog (guitar, mic, keyboard, etc) to S/PDIF converter?

Also, in SONAR, if I had something coming in on the S/PDIF, would I be able to record it at the same time I'm recording analog? Would they be in sync with each other?

have a look at this thing http://www.smproaudio.com/new_release.htm its called the in5 (you have to scroll down a little) its quite inexpensive, i am seriously thinking about getting one, however i haven't heard one yet, so the quality is something im not sure about

By inexpensive, could you give me an estimate? I searched a couple dealers, but no one seemed to carry it. Maybe they're not available yet in the U.S.?

the "in5" is about $250aussie so i'm guessing between $100 and $150 u.s. .... there is a distributors list at www.smproaudio.com somwhere i'm am certain they are delivered to the u.s....... but like i said, with a price like that you have to question the quality
 
SM ProAudio IN 5

That IN5 pre-amp looks pretty cool.

The text claims it can upgrade the A/D convertors on your current sound card. Right...

So if you connect it's SP/DIF output (which is 24Bit 96Hz) to a sound card that originally only supports 16Bit 48Hz (Max setting), is the sound card going to be able to record the 24Bit signal received?

And, if you don't mind, one more question:

Where does the whole 'latency' thing come into effect? Is it only relevant if you are using softsynths? How little (or much) latency can I expect, roughly, with the Audiophile (WinXp, Ath 1.2, 512MB)?

SM ProAudio IN5

I have been talking to the UK distributor of the IN5 and after a lot of exchanged e-mails have got them to send me one to try out.

When I get hold of it I'll do some real world testing for the users here as so far I've not seen any reviews of this unit.

Billabong, as long as you're going to guitar center, take a look at the Tascam TM-D1000 digital mixer. They are being blown out for $500.

The A/D is 20bit but internally the path and effects are 24-bit.
