Looking for a Mentor =]!

Hey guys, I know most of you are very busy so I'll try to get to the point. I've been a amateur musician for most my life and having seen all these amazing artists come out on youtube, I wanted to give a shot at it. However, although I know how to play the instruments live, I can't seem to get a handle on how to record instruments/vocals and mixing them properly.

Its for my girlfriend of 7 years and I think she would love it.

I have the following equipment:

AT 2035 condensor Mic
Shure SM57
2 mic stands
Yamaha p70 Keyboard
(soon to get midi to usb cable)
Seagull S6
Logic Express 9
Apogee Duet

If someone is kind enough to be my mentor, I'd really appreciate it. I'm a quick learner, but I don't know where to start and how to get the result I'm looking for.

This might not be the answer you're looking for eek, but you should let the whole community here (and abroad on the interwebs), be your mentor. If, in fact, you were looking for one person to walk you through it. The reason being no one knows it all. We all have different bits of info that can help your situation. With that being said, the equipment you have is a good start. I'm assuming you have it all connected and have the basics of your recording program under your belt? If so, go to my next paragragh. If not, then let us know and we can get someone in here that is familiar with your gear and get you going.

If you have the basics down, then you need to skip over to the recording techniques forum. Learn a bit about mic placement and things like that. Then when you have a solid recording, come back here and we'll help you from there.

P.S. If you need to know something on the fly, the best way I have found is to google "tweakheadz ______". Like if you want to know about compression, do "tweakheadz compression". Or MIDI, google "tweakheadz MIDI". One of the absolute best websites on the webs for recording and gear information.

If you post up what City you're in, you might find a local member than might invite you buy to help you get your head around some of this stuff.

Also, definitely don't ruin your relationship of 7 years by getting married.

See... that's the great thing about this place... not only do we sort out your recording needs, we offer a little sideline in relationship advice - which, let's face it, musicians often need....

My advice - begin.

Your journey will involve lots of little steps... involving specific actions - what you do next depends upon where you are and what you're struggling with.

So, in case no-one actually steps up to the mentor role, plug everything in, record something (or fail... either is good) then come back and ask specific questions... that's largely how it's done.
