Looking for a fuzz effect on vocals

Hi,
First off, I'm sorry I'm really new to this and if this topic has been covered before in another thread, I tried looking but couldnt find any.

Im looking for a sound for my vocals that sounds like an distorted, old fuzz recording or as if it coming from an intercom etc..
Not overly fuzzed or distorted but along the lines of The Sonics etc (garage rock sounding)
This is more live than home recording but we are recording live demos at the moment so it be great to find out what to do.

I havent bought a new mic, have been using an old terrible mic and have just bought a JBL speaker (not EON) and am planning to buy a mixer.

What I was wondering was what microphone should I buy and if this fuzz effect is brought out by a mixer etc? Im clueless how to reach this effect which im sure is easy.

Is this for live use or recording? If it's for live, you probably could just run an effects loop from the mixer through a guitar distortion pedal (like a big muff or rat). You could also run the mic into a guitar amp and then mic the amp and/or run from a line out on the amp to a line in on your mixer. For recording (to a computer), there are many distortion effect plugins that can be applied after fact.

If you're recording via computer, most amp simulator plugins will work pretty well. www.kvraudio.com has tons of free plugs. For live, scrubs is right on. In either situation, just remember to gate the vocals, the noisefloor rises dramatically when you apply distortion.

I've gotten good telephone/megaphone effects by using that free Izotope Vinyl plugin, believe it or not. Not really distorted, but more "lo-fi" and dirty.
