I need a descent reverb unit (1U rack) that I can use to add reverb to dry recorded vocals.

It will be used as a send and return device rather than be recorded to tape. However I have never bought one before... always been using plug ins.

What is a good unit in the $200 range? I know that the TC Electronics $2,000 would be nice, but this doesn't need to be on that level yet. This will basically be part of a song writing set up where I can learn a little more about writing songs and recording using outboard gear. When I get really serious about achieving some steller sound quality, then I will move more in the direction of the $2,000 gear.

Any suggestions for a place to sart looking?

Thanks guys

Mike

I can think of three very affordable units right off the bat.

The Yamaha R1000 (which I believe can be had for under $50)

Zoom RFX1000

and the Alesis reverb line.

I have the Yamaha and the Zoom and I like them very much. Very affordable!

I don't have any Alesis reverbs, but they too are quite easy to afford.

i have an old alesis quadraverb that has very good reverbs and delays. They can be had for very cheap used. The plated reverbs are especially good.

Question: Why spend the extra money for a budget outboard? The plug-ins will most likely give you similar, if not better results, considering the budget for the outboard. Could you use it in other instances, like in a guitar rig or live sound?

BTW, did you ever buy the echo mona? From your recent posts it als looks like you are looking for a major revamp in a home studio too.

BTW, I just got my RME Multiface and so far so good, though my day job hasn't given me any time to really spend time with it.

I bought a like-new Alesis MidiVerb IV off of Harmony Central ad board.

$100.00 plus ten to ship. You can find them cheap and they are good entry level units. Lots of presets and all have adjustable parameters.

About the Mona...

I had ordered it from 8thstreet.com and had it already to be shipped to me in Germany. I had also bought a DR-770 drum machine from them and it was going to be shipped too. The total for both of those things was $1,100 and something. That was a heafty charge for some gear that I am just going to be using to write songs.

I wanted it so bad and it hurt my heart to call up and cancel the order, but for writing songs I just decided to get the old Tascam 424 mkIII analog 4 track casette deck. I am still going to get the DR-770 (unless you guys have a better suggestion) but I will buy it here in Europe.

After I buy something from the US and have it shipped here, pay the import tax that Germany requires, any go to a music store to get a new European power supply.. I have paid more than if I just paid the slightly higher European prices.

I thought I was going to get away with a bargain... just goes to show, that if it sounds too good and easy to be true.... IT IS!!!

nother quick question... Is the Tascam424mkIII the LAST 4 track cassette studio on the market? I can't find a single thing that is casette based other than the Tascam 424. I know that digital is better by 10,000 times. But this Tascam job costs $320... and the cheapest digital thing is like $800-$900.
No middle ground?

I have grown very fond of the TC M300...stunningly rich reverbs and such, expecially for the money, and it can be had for around 295.00 USD -

I might add that even an inexpensive 'verb can sound much better with proper eq when brought back into the mix. You may experiment with eq'ing the reverbed signal to brighten it up or get the low end much out...

I respectfully disagree. In my experience, I've not heard a plu in reverb that sounded as good as a hardware unit.
I recently picked up a couple of these Lexicon units and am very pleased with them.

Im with track rat, get a lexicon. The mpx100(is about $200). I got an older lexicon, the Reflex and its pretty nice, sounds good. i picked it up off ebay for$96. They make good stuff.

I would agree about the lexicon's and maybe the alesis stuff in the price range.

Pisces -- for songwriting, the tascam may be your best bet. It is simple to use and easy to get tracks down. I think vestex has some very simple, very cheap units. My friend has one that he got for like $100 give or take and he uses it to work on different vocal approaches to new songs.

If you want to go digital, there are used Fostex FD-4's and 8's that can probably be had for $250 (4) to $500 (8 with HD). I cut my teeth on the FD-8. I still have it, though it is not seeing much use. Now that I have the Multiface with ADAT, I will probably transfer my songs over soon. Maybe use the FD-8 as a mixer if I need 8 more inputs, throught the ADAT.

I have a Teac RS-20 and 20B I'd let go pretty cheap. They are 2U rack mounts I bought off ebay and never even tested. I'd be glad to test them and make sure they work if you're interested. I doubt I'm ever actually going to use them.

Plano Texas

haburton...

You don't have to specify that Plano is near Dallas. Everyone knows where Plano is. It was pronounced "The Heroin Capitol of America" a few years back. Don't know why??? I've never been there but I knew a girl from Plano named Heidi...

Know any Heidi's?

She is about 24-25 now.
