Hey,
Hope this is ok to post in this forum. I imagine this is mostly about acoustic drums and rightly so, but I have a question about how to achieve a certain kind of drum sound that is most likely of the drum machine variety
.
For whatever reason, I have always been drawn to that grainy, nasty, lo-fi rap beat sound from early '90's acts like Public Enemy, Cypress Hill...stuff like that. Does anyone know the sound I'm talking about?
Those dudes would often rap about "bangin' on an 808", but I can't afford one of those and frankly, every sample of one I've heard sounded thin and digitized and whimpy. The beats I'm talking about sound more like mutated motown samples if that makes any sense. I could post some youtube links if that would help.
Anyway, I've tried for years to emulate that kind of sound by applying any number of effects (compression, verb, distortion, etc.) to a boss dr550 and never come close. I know people tend to hate these "how do I get that sound" questions (I think 'cause the answer is usually out of reach of the OP), but this one seems like something that might be common knowledge to some, plus it is technological in nature and not tied to musical ability...any ideas? I don't expect to nail it, would just like to get kind of close, ya know? Thanks in advance...
