Im looking at getting started in home recording I was hoping someone could recommend some equipment. I wanted to record my guitars with my computer and a decent mic. My price range is about $600(not including software). Any help you all could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

Pres I'd consider:

M-Audio DMP3 ($200) 2 channels
SP VTB-1 ($180) 1 channel
ART Pro MPA ($340) 2 channels
RNP ($475) 2 channels
Meek VC3Q ($200) 1 channel, includes eq and compression

Mics:
Marshall V67 ($90) LD
SP C1 ($230) LD
CAD (the one chessrock recommends)
SP B1 ($80) or B3 ($160) LD
Rode NT-1000 ($300) LD
AT 4033 ($300) LD
AT 4040 ($300) LD

Proposed setups that will give you a lot of recording options (two channels and two different mics for different voices and for stereo recording guitar):

DMP3 with a SP B1 and a SP C1 = $510 (and you'd have some money left for cables)

Pro VLA with a SP B1 and a V67 = $520 (this adds both clean and tube flavor)

VTB-1 and a VC3Q with a SP B1 and a V67 = $550 (this adds both clean and tube flavor plus some eq and compression)

Or you could just buy the best 2 channel pre you can afford, the RNP, and get either a B1 or V67 now and add to your mic collection at a later date.

Of course, we haven't even talked about a monitoring system--a $400 minimum investment.

You may just want to spend the extra couple of hundered and get a digital recorder. By the time you spend the money for the software and PCI board you will have more than paid for it. They are under 1K and provide 24 bit multi track recording.

I looked at the PC route before and just could not justify the cost against a digital recorder. I settled on the Yamaha 16G in the end. I have my PC tied into it so I can still download samples and tracks from the internet and CD and still have the interfaces and FX in the recorder.

Just my opinion of course and always remember 'have fun'.
