I'm going to be buying a Fostex DMT8, it's 8 tracks, and has as many ins as it does out, which is exactly what I need for producing dub reggae. Is there anything I should know about these older digital multi-trackers? Is it worth it, or should I just buy a Model 80 off ebay for 100 dollars more? (dmt8=200, model 80=300) Any input (ha, ha.... yea.) would be grealy appreciated.

Just a note on the DMT-8 ... yes,it is a 8 ch hard disk recorder, but you can only record 2 ch at the same time max.. So, if your doing individual instruments, then thats cool ... But if you want to record mare than 2 band memebers at the same time, you'll have a problem .. I have the DMt-8 and its an excellent unit ... I use that for individual recordings.. I just upgraded to the new Fostex VF 160EX model .. It comes with a cdrw burner and a 40GB hard drive... Also, it can record 16 tracks or channels at the same time .. but you need a daughter board for the other 8 channels as it only has 8 inputs on the recorder itself, but it does have 16 ch faders onboard..
Plus it has effect, compressors and mastering tools on board...
Only bad things about that machine i didn't like was the display screent was too small to read .. Overall, I'd say it's a good recoder to have and the price was amazing too ...

Thank you! I'm going to be producing Dub Reggae, so recording to one track at a time is perfect, never mind two! Lee "Scratch" Perry only had a single 4 track reel to reel, a 4 channel mixer and one mic to make the things he did...

Actually....

I believe the original DMT8 will record 4 tracks at once...

Correct me if I am wrong.

The Dmt8vl will record 2 tracks analog and 2 tracks digitally at once=4.

Dom :)

Dom's right,...

from what I've read & determined from the manual.

I just didn't want to come right out of the gate and contradict the first respondent,... not being an actual DMT-8 owner, myself.

I think the biggest criticism of the DMT-8 was the limited HD space, (by today's standards), and the limited digital I/O, (again, by today's standards). There's no USB, optical, or S/Pdif output, but digital I/O's limited to a 50-pin SCSI port for hooking up a DAT.

That's what I've scrutinized, through my study of the DMT-8 (std).

Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

On the positive side, the DMT-8's sound quality has never been criticized, AFAIK, and it has all the whizbang editing capability that digital is famous for. Also, it has all the analog I/O capability you'd ever need.

I'd get one, if I had the room. Or, two!;)

PS: the full-version of the DMT-8 manual is available by download, from the official Fostex website. /DA

...

I think the "vl" designation on the DMT-8vl stands for "very lite", as it's a "lite" version of the DMT-8 (std).

EQ on the DMT-8vl is less high-end than on the DMT-8 (std),... which is another important point that would affect your daily recording reality.

If I were to get a DMT-8, I'd be sure to get the "std" and not the "vl", and I suggest you do, too. No offense to other members./DA

Thank you, so much for that!!!

I'd heard there was a tech upgrade to the HDD on the DMT-8!

Many users will find this information invaluable!

Thanx again!!

/DA ;)
