Has anyone tried this NU-Foam yet for room treatment? I have and it works pretty damn good. It is somewhat similar to OC 703 but made of Polyester. I have also seen it for sale as a loose bat for speaker cabinets, (called Polyfil.)

The manufacturer's website says this...

Flame Retardant
Will Not Yellow
Will Not Disintegrate
Resists Mildew
100% Polyester
Washable
Non-Allergenic

I think most WalMarts in America sell this stuff in pre-cut square sheets for seat cushions, (15x17x2 and 22x22x2.) My WalMart does anyway. I understand you can get it in rolls too, but I haven't found that yet.

so many bad previous work experiences with polyfil, i could never dare put it near my hobby

Isnt 703 much much Cheaper and probably alot more effective?

You didn't say anything about it's sound absorbtion or density. How much do you need to get absorbtion down to 40hz?

No, no, no! I didn't mean it was good for bass traps. I am using it as a substitution for egg create foam to absorb mids and highs.

I meant it is similar to 703 in that it is spun into a batt and then compressed to a semi rigid matt. That is where the similarities end.

I think it reduced my mid and high reflections pretty well. I haven't found any specs on it yet but, it looks and feels like it is more dense than open cell egg create. Perhaps when I get time I will remove it, measure the room, re-install it, and measure the room again.

I was impressed by the fact that it was fire resistant.

That would be interesting. Egg crate foam is almost useless due to it's erratic absorbtion properties.

Well, I didn't get taken as you put it. It was my own idea. I just saw the stuff and thought it would work. I only bought 8 squares of it. If it turns out to be a failed experiment, then so be it. It didn't ruin me financially.

I'm sure it has "some" absorbing properties. I mean hell; even speaker grill cloth absorbs some sound energy. And it IS two inches thick. Do you really think it is 100% useless?

I weighed some and then calculated the density to be roughly 1.6 lbs pcf. Being two inches thick, I'm guessing it will help absorb wavelengths of 2 inches and shorter. What is that, 6000 or 7000Hz? My highs have always sounded somewhat harsh in this room anyway. Maybe this will help tame it.

I just downloaded the demo version of ETF5. As soon as I learn how to use it, I will post a few results here. Hopefully it will show some early reflection control.

If I was wrong about this stuff, at least I am man enough to admit it and walk away with my dignity. We all come here to learn, don't we?

I think the trouble is that you are at best suckingo ut that one frequency. That doesn't tame reflexions so much as put a hole in that frequency. You generally want reflexions to be diffused, which could be as simple as pieces of plywood bent into curves, or bookshelves with vatrious sized books inside. Absobtion is best for low frequency stuff.

Alternately, if you know your room has a specfic problem at a certian frequency, like fluttler or comb filtering, and you are able to determine that you can fix something at that targeted frequency, then great. I don't see that happening here exactly.

it sounds more like you are dealing with something that looks like something else that is effective (especially at absorbing low frequency) and trying to project those qualities onto foam seat cushions.

Daav.
