Maybe a dumb question...but...

Does it matter what position your case (w/guitar in it) is in when it is going to remain there for a while? Vertical? Horizontal?

Vertical is preferred, I think. I remember someone talking about loosening the tension on the strings a little, but you may want to wait for another reply!

For what it's worth, my 67 Tele has been in it's case for the better part of the last 20 years laying flat, and it does not seem to have suffered much.

I suspect others know more about what is really best.

I suspect others know more about what is really best.

Or, at least, have strong opinions! This question came up years ago: when transporting an amp speaker or combo amp, which is best: on its feet, on its side, on its back, or on its front?

Answer: everybody agreed, on it feet...except for those who insisted that it should be on its side...and then a whole nuther bunch said on its back, which leaves us with the large contingent who demanded that storage be on its side.

Look at it this way: what's worse than leaving it out of its case???

How long are we talking? Are you giving up the guitar for a few months? Putting it into storage? If not, why case it? Guitars in cases don't get played. If you want to keep it safe but in your face then I recommend a wall mounted guitar hook. I use the String Swing. It keeps the guitar out in the open, safely out of the way, and easy to hand. I recently moved it from my downstairs studio to my upstairs and I am now playing 4-6 hours a day over 4-6 hours a week I was playing.

Loosen the strings and store the case in a space which will not get either too hot or too cold, nor too dry. Make sure the case is not going to fall over, and that nothing will fall on the case.

Beyond that, it really doesn't matter.

I ask because often I often am not be able to play my guitar at all during the week. I've been trying to keep it vertical (or horizontal/case flat on its' back at worst) during these periods.

Little or no danger of being knocked over, as the room is locked and no "traffic" passes through. Temp/humidity are as constant as I am able to maintain...

So Doesn't matter - no clear consensus seems to be the answer then!
I guess that should be reassuring :D

Thanks.
