Hi all,
I'm quite new to integrating hardware synths into Logic Pro, and I ran into an issue. A few days ago I purchased a Behringer UMC1820 with an extension, the ADA8200. I think I cabled them correctly - the ADA8200 is set to slave, the ADAT/SPIF button on the front of the 1820 is set to ADAT, and I connected two optical cables: one going from ADA8200 OUT to the 1820 IN, and vice versa. When I hook up a synth to port 1 of the ADA8200, I get a signal on the LED. So that seems fine as well.
The 1820 is seen by Logic Pro without issues, so when I create a new track, I can pick any of the 1820's inputs (1-8) and sound comes thru the speakers just fine.
However, for some reason the ADA8200 doesn't seem to send any audio to the speakers - after doing some research, it seems you can't use the ADA8200 without a DAW. Or at least that's how I understood it.

In Logic Pro, the ADAT inputs aren't labelled as such, and I find it confusing. So inputs 1-8 come from the 1820 and they all work fine without issues. I can play on the keyboard and I can at least hear what I'm doing. But when I create a new audio track and I select input 11, then I can record the synth that's plugged into port 1 of the ADA8200, but I don't get real-time audio (meaning when I play the keyboard, I hear nothing).. is it supposed to work this way? I hope my explanation makes sense; English is not my primary language.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

The ADAT inputs should show up after the inputs assigned to the interface that is connected to the Mac, and which has the ADAT connected to its optical *in* jack. I.e., in Logic Pro, if the interface was showing up with inputs 1-8 (before the ADAT was connected), the additional inputs should appear as 9-16.

I was using the ADA8200 with an older Focusrite interface, and it did not have hardware to control which device had the master clock, so it was set in software (a Focusrite app on the Mac). You might need to fiddle with which device is actually controlling the clock. My fuzzy brain can't remember that far back right now. Can't hurt anything to switch them around. And, you might need to disconnect and reconnect the interface, or power it off and on, or even restart the Mac.

Thanks for the feedback - I have the inputs sorted out; there's an option called I/O Labels in the Mix menu, it allows you to change the names of the input ports yourself. So that's fine, but the question regarding the "live" sound coming from the ADAT ports remains though .. All synths that are connected to the 1820, are audible when I play the keyboard, but none of the synths connected to the ADAT ports seem to work this way.. So either this is how it's supposed to be (which is very annoying because there is no live sound), or else there's still something wrong with my routing/audio setup ...

The 1820 may be "presenting" all the inputs for the driver to "see" but without a signal going into those ones that are assigned to ADAT, it doesn't mean it's going to actually have any data for the system to process. What did you change other than the labels? Clock source? Restarting? Nothing worked?

Looking at the switches on and jacks in those devices, you should have the optical cable (not coax) going from the OUT of the ADA8200, with the clock set to MASTER because the data is flowing *out* of it (there is not word-clock output from the 1820), so it cannot be the "slave" in this case. The cable obviously goes to the input of the UMC1820, with the front panel switch pushed in for ADAT. Any software settings and DAW sample rate should match the ADA8200 master switch. Then, restart your Mac. (Maybe there is a manual for these pieces - used to be one of the things difficult to find for that brand.)

I think the ADA8200 is currently set to Slave; I'll check tonight and let you know how it goes :)

You rock, Sir :)

I've set the ADA8200 to Slave, 44.1Khz, matching the settings in Logic .. and voila :) Let there be sound.
Thanks for the enormous help; and indeed I don't think it's explained in the docs very well!
