Sorry if it could be a stupid question, but I'm not an expert user...just want to give to my bass lines created with the virtual piano of my Cakewalk 8.04, a good real sound...

So I downloaded the bass samples from

http://www.natural-studio.co.uk/

and got an .sf file of 30 MB. I downloaded also the demo version of Awave studio and try to convert the file into an .ins format, but I'm still not able to load it into Cakewalk as a new instrument (it tell me "files does not contain any instrument definition").

Could some of you pleas tell me where I'm wrong???

Thank you very much for your help!!

Depends on what you want to do.

the .ins file just contains the names of patches, banks and instruments used in a MIDI source (of sounds). You don't need the ins-file at all really, it dosen't contain any sounds (in case you wondered).

An .sf is a SoundFont and in your case (since you're using a fairly old version) you need a soundcard that supports soundfonts, such as SB Live or Audigy. (Or perphaps a standalone sf-player).

Hey moskus,

thank you very much, you infos and the link are very useful!!
Since I have an old sound card (older ,of course, than my Cakewalk version....) do you think that I could load directly the .Sf file just by getting a more recent version of the software??

It's possible. But then of course you need a pretty fast computer (and then you realise you need a better soundcard anyway).

Why just not get an SB Live? They're pretty cheap these days. :)

Yes, maybe you're right: now it's time to get some new stuff...

p.s. thank you very much for all...
