lo-fi vocals

Hi guys,

I already posted something about getting a general lo-fi sound on my songs but i had one last question...

in this song The Orwells - Blood Bubbles - YouTube

could someone tell me how theyd get that lo-fi sound? the reverb/saturation specifically. everytime i try to replicate this the reverb sounds too 'big' and hi-fi rather than lo-fi.

any replies would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

These vocals have some filtering and distortion on them as well as the reverb you mentioned. I would try creating your own reverb chamber. Set up a speaker in a reverberant room in your house. Play the vocals back through the speaker and record it.

Hey kid,

Honestly, there's nothing sophisticated about this tone.

You can either produce it inside the box, using vst effects, or in the "real world".

Try recording your voice inside the bathroom and other places with high amount of reverb. Route your voice through your guitar amp like you said on the other thread...Experimentation is the key.

If I was looking forward to achieve such results, I would do it digitally.

Try cutting off the high end using an EQ. Distort it with one of various saturation plugins. Spend some time tweaking a reverb plugin. Maybe route your voice through a guitar amp simulator like Amplitube too see if you can get close to it.

Anyway, there's no recipe for anything...There are countless ways to achieve the same results. Find one that suits you best.

Don't forget that you'll have to use the same technique with the instruments as well, otherwise this ultra low-fi voice wont fit in the mix.
