Actually, i've seen this deal on several websites. Try www.abemusic.com they've got the 2001 and 603 both for $174.
I'm getting mine off eBay, but you can find this deal alot of places..

good luck

hey jdavis... I had this problem with vocals sounding too "up front" too (using also a dynamic sm57-style mic).
Using a dynamic mic you will always have a lot of high and low end because you have to get really close to the mic.
So the first thing you should try is cutting the lows (maybe 60 hz for low vocals, 100 and more hz for higher ones... for backing vocals even more).
also the highs can give you the impression of vocals being quite close to you... so cut above 10kHz, maybe even start at 8kHz.
the result may sound a bit like "telephone voice" but only in comparison with the original recording - listen to it some hours later.
another frequency to cut is around 700 to 800 hz. I don't know why and it really seems unlogical, just give it a try. but always in combination with low- and high-cuts.

i forgot one thing yet: I don't know if it's only in n-track... but using reverb parallel always sounds much better than using it serial. (not so spacey and ovious)

Wow, thid thread's stoll going strong. Haven't checked it 'cos as far as I remember, I didn't get any notification.
What to say?
Love to record in living room, but'd have to get a seriously long mic cable. I live in a big house, and then I'd be like running up and downstairs pressing the record and play buttons. And no, I'm not carting my computer downstairs.
I'm not sure whether it is a sonic or a performance problem? could be both.
Actually what I reckon is the reverb is nicer in the living room, and Cakewalk just can't simulate it right.
I'll try the warm-up deal when I get round to it.
cheers
MAston.
P.S Anyone know where I can get a free (or very cheap) compressor plug-in for cakewalk.

do a search for "blue line". you CAN pay for it. directX - should work with cakewalk, right?
then I've got another one: H20 by smart electronics. free, VST.
