I had my first go at recording live. This is the outcome. The bass was put through a J station, the keys were straight off the desk, the guitar was miked with an SM58. It was a lot easier as the band used a drum track so no live drum problems. I thought it came out OK
Wadayarekon?

I don't think we were meant to hear this song. Link is dead.

Killer dude. I love that tune to start with, but you did a great job. How did you do the horns? Samples? What's real players and what's sampled?

Nice vocals too. ALl in all very impressed. This is not a simple tune either.

But where's the chukachuka chukachukaaaaa weird guitar bitz?

Cheerz.

You guys do "Boogie Oogie Oogie?" I play with Donald Ray Johnson all the time, the guy who cowrote that with Perry Kibble. I played with Perry a few times before his death as well.

Those dudes won a grammy for that tune!

Don is a cool guy.

Thanks for the comments, I'm glad you liked it. We do play Boogie Oogie and I recorded it at the same time as Do I Do. I haven't mastered it yet though 'cus I dropped my compressor and broke it. When I get it back I'll post it to see what you think.

The horns are ploayed from a Roland Fantom as are the rest of the keys, I split the piano / electric piano onto the left, the horns in the middle and the high strings on at the top. It's all a bit of a compromise because the original has got two keyboard players and they are both a lot better than me (Stevie Wonder / Herbie Hancock I think). The guitar is also a mix and match between the two original lines. On the original one is panned left playing the chord funk line (sounds like a 335 or something similar very tonal). The other is the pick line on a strat.

Its all played except live the drum track which is programmed and played through the PA from a mini disc. Thats why the bass drags in the second break down and I screw up the timing of the chords in the 3rd verse.

The thing that gets me about this track is the vocals, when we first approached it we assumed they followed the same pattern all the way through. When we listened again though Stevie Wonder changes them up and ad libs all the way through (effortlessly). I reckon Sharon (the singer) does a pretty good job but it took a lot of work.

That's a woman on vocals? Cool. I thought it was a guy with a high voice!

Nice work.
