Recorded a band this past weekend with a buddy of mine. They wanted a lively feel to the overall mix. Only thing that wasn't my idea 100% was the vocals. I feel they could be a bit louder and less reverb but thats how they wanted it. We did 4 video cameras, 16 audio inputs all recorded in a nice living room with vaulted ceilings and wooden floors. Cant wait till everything is put together. Good and bad constructive criticism welcome.

I thought it sounded OK. A bit too much "room" in the mix, especially on the vocal. But I don't know if that was avoidable or not.

The clean guitar on the right seemed louder than the vocal.

The kick sounds a bit loud and thuddy.

I think how lively a recording sounds is more up to the band than the engineer and mixer. A lot of stuff near the end was too much guitar wanking. Maybe that worked live, I don't know.

There are parts, like around 4:30, where the vocal was barely audible.

You have just described the mixing style of Ambient music.



But in all seriousness, these guys aren't fully Ambient and doesn't deserve an Ambient type mix, so your problems I agree with and should be addressed.



Here's my friends Ambient band. Oh man, I would so mix this differently, but it sorta fits what they are trying to achieve.
