hey, i was asked to record a battle of the bands by a high school. iv never had any experience recording live shows. i dont want to get in the way (truthfully i dont want to get involoved in the mess) of the setup and/or mixing process so i was planning on running the left and right RCA phono outputs from the mixer to my korg D1200 dig. multitrack via a RCA to 1/4" converter to tracks 1 and 2 of my rec. is this the best option? is this the only option????? if there is a better way....what is it????
thanx a lot.......

I think that's how I'd do it - simple stereo tracks. Makes your job easier and quicker. Puts the onus on the bands to have a good FOH mix.

If you can add a room mic or an XY pair, that may help tremendously... You'll probably have to compensate for the delay, but it will give you a much more natural "room" sound.

Plus, the audience, the guitars (right, like they'll put THEM through the FOH mix...), etc.

If the FOH mix turns out to be wonderful, you're set. If not, you've got some room to mess with.

listen to john. :D

guitars usually do not get put through an FOH mix in a smaller room. depending on the drums, sometimes neither do they (or sometimes it's just SOME of the drums (kick, but nothing else, etc).

recording from the mixer will likely give you a crystal clear sound, but it will also likely be incomplete in terms of the instrumentation and mix.

if you've got 4 tracks, run 2 from the mixer, and use 2 for a pair of SDCs setup in XY or ORTF in the room. you'll likely have to compensate for the delay in software (just slide one over a few ms after the fact), but i can guarantee that your recording will be a LOT better.

Yep... what he said. Good advice.

You know, the more I think about it, I'd actually try to get the best room sound possible FIRST - That's what's going to sound more "natural" to begin with.

Then, add the FOH mix to taste. Again, there's going to be some delay compensation going on...
