Following the general advice of a Homerecording.com tutorial, I got a Sharp MD 15 for recording band rehearsals (we're a blues trio). I also got a Radio Shack PZM mic that records directly to the Sharp. The first recording done this way came off pretty good. I put the PZM on the shag carpeted floor 3' in front of the bass drum and the Bass guitar rig. I'll tell you, plenty of thumpa thumpa on playback there.
But my reheasal recording, while good sounding, was not as strong as I'd like. My next step is to run the PZM to an Alesis 3630 to get signal strength up where I want it, and to add a little compression so vocals and my guitar are more up with the rythym section in volume. I'm thinking we could get a servicable demo on the Sharp and burn it to a CD. I'm keeping it simple by using only one of two PZMs I have, but eventually I'd like to use both for a stereo demo.
Here's my questions:
Anybody have experience using PZMs to Minidiscs? And, in general, any ideas on how to record a trio in stereo using two PZMs?
Specifically, would modifying the PZM so it has a 9volt battery instead of a AA battery inline make much of difference? A hackers page says this will improve the SPL. Heck if I know what that is.
Finally, and this one's real technical, I tried to mod the Sharps MD-15 Service mode settings to change the factory EEPROM EQ settings ( DEQSET) per http://www.minidisc.org/sharp_md_mt15_service_mode.htm.
I'd like to diminish the bass emphasis as - cautiously- suggested.
Here's a good example of the problem:
There's a factory setting of HQ1 90,
and I'd like to set it to HQ1 00,
but I can't get it to become anything but
HQ1 91, or HQ1 92, or HQ1 93 and so forth using the"+ volume" button to change the settings.
The first digit won't budge, and I can't figure out how to change it. There isn't any mention of this problem on the Webb, and Sharp isn't too public about Service mode to start with. Anybody know how to hack this puppy?
