hey dudes

got a gig in a couple of weeks time and heres what's gotta go thru the system. we got 12 channels at our disposal:

5 piece drum kit
Bass (d.i for this one)
Guitar Amp 1
Guitar Amp 2
Lead vox
Backing vox 1
Backing vox 2

basically we've got 6 channels for drums. i know a bit about drum mic'ing, but with 6 channels, what is most important, and what techniques could be used?

thanks

Couple of room mics and a pair of overheads plus a mic each on the kick and snare .

Really depends on how large the venue is and how loud the Pa is going to be set. My old band played plenty of places where the Overheads weren't really needed because cymbals/drums are loud as hell to begin with. These were smaller venues though with not so great sound systems. Just a thought.....

well the kick and snare are the most important. is this gonna be a mono mix? you could mic all the toms and 1 overhead if you wanted, if you have room you could do a hi hat mic too.. or just 2 overheads. whatevers easier

If you're only using a 12 channel mixer, the odds are this isn't a big room.

Tune the kit up a little tighter than normal.
Mic the Kick, the snare, and from behind the drummer, put a boom with a condenser directly over his/her head and aiming straight down at the top of their head, about 6" to 12" above their head.

What this will give you is sort of a "premixed" sound (The mic will pick up what the drummer hears) and if the drummer can even remotely play dynamically, you'll get a good drumsound.

Then just roll out some of the low mids, and boost the lows a hair.

Bam, BIG drumsound.

Oh... is it for an actual gig gig?

In that case I'd go the two overheads plus kick and snare root and forego the other two channels.

Simple is better in live situations.

I don't know if it's for a Gig, but I feel the same way.
Keep it simple.

Yep. Just because one has twelve channels doesn't mean it's mandatory to use all twelve if you can do it with less. Ten is easily enough.
