NL5

Unpossible!
Thought I'd throw this up since the MP3 clinic seems to be pretty slow right now.

Lemme know what you think.

:D

Its a nice recording and a good performance. The song is a bit repetitive for my tastes, but I am not the target audience so pay no attention to me.:D I like the recording quite a bit.:)

Thank you! I agree that it could use a little "more" going on. The songs will have a full band with additional arrangement eventually, but putting the band together has spit and sputtered along. The singer/songwriter finally decided just to come in and do 8 tracks live with just him and his guitar for now.

sounds killer man. this would really rock with a full band going. quality of the recording is excellent as well.

Nice work. Clean and clear with good dynamics but no imbalance. The guitar sounds a little narrow/stark to me but that could be perfect in a mix with a bigger arrangement.

As Tim said, this might be right for when you put other instruments in.

But right now, guitar sounds good but a little thin and the vocals are way too out front (at least for me). I'd bring the guitar up. Other than that it's sounding good.

Live recording eh? Where was it recorded?
I don't mind the out front vocals.. but I do notice some digital artifacts on the vocals at some points... any type of pitch fix going on?

No pitch fix. Not sure what you're hearing. It was recorded live here at the studio. 3 mics, so there are some phase issues.

ah ok. thought this was a live like, at a show thing..
the digital artifact thing that I'm hearing
is right at "for love" at the beginning
it sounds like a really slight effect, maybe phase? to me it sounded like something a pitch fix would cause but.. oh well..

This song sounds really good. Seriously.

I like your voice much.

I think what your hearing is the pre and comp getting hit pretty hard and over-saturating. He is a pretty dynamic singer, and I tend to squish the crap outta vocals. In this sparse of an arrangement you can hear it, whereas in a denser mix it probably wouldn't be that noticeable Also, the phase issues may be a bit more pronounced ion the louder sections.

Yeah, it's live as in all done in one shot, no editing, no overdubbing. Just him singing and playing with 3 mic's on him. If you listen in headphones, you'll hear his voice move because he moved his head and sang more into the guitar mics. We had to start over because it was WAY to obvious in the first few songs.

Have to agree with everyone here. Great song but needs the other instruments to really bring it all together. The vocal and guitar at the beginning would be fine then maybe have the electric, bass, and drums at the "You wanted me to be" section. Almost expected them to come in. :D Great piece.

guitar needs more crunch...ie top end....need to introduce more dynamic...new strings ?? or prehaps right hand technique....

..lots of angst ...nice,,,like it.

people take the effort to listen and reply but artistes dont reply...maybe they are in the rockstar mode....

Nice

Nice stuff NL5.
The singer has a Dave Grohl thing going on which I really dig!

I tweaked the mix to tame the vocal dynamics and add some more warmth to the mix.

Let us know what you think. :)

The vocals are too dynamic even if you did squish the life out of them already!
I don't agree with Zazz on the "guitar needs more crunch/high end" thing.
The guitar is a bit attacky, but I would put that down to playing style and the type of guitar more so than mic position/selection probably.

No problem

I REALLY appreciate your feedback.

so your confused...well let me explain..... somebody takes the time to download your work and listen to it..and then give an opinion on it...and you say nothing?

and when i said im sorry about the quota it was sarcasm because somehow the fact that you had made 3 replies means you can ignore everyone after that.

hope that clears up the confusion....

The confusion was referring to why you have such a hard on about me missing a post. Holy fuck. I responded to nearly everyone, and thanked everyone in advance for taking the time to listen/critique. Excuse the fuck out of me for not responding to you, and for wasting your time.

I tried to thank you nicely several times, but apparently that's not enough for you, so let me do it one more time.

THANK YOU VERY FUCKING MUCH!

Sorry Eck, I didn't see this post till just now.

I understand where your were going with that, but a couple things. You can hear the compressor pumping, which is not good for an acoustic piece. As many pointed out, his voice kinda overpowers his guitar playing, as well as the simplicity of the arrangement. He wanted it vocal heavy to sort of compensate for the weaker guitar. So I balanced it to where it gets a little weak in spots but mostly overpowers the guitar. Your mastering is just the opposite. So, in effect, where mine is too loud, yours is just right, and vice versa. I agree with the majority here that he really needs to get a band figured out, so the full arrangement will be behind him.
