Little Games - new song

Here are some things that would improve it:

* More attention to balance. The male vox is WAY too loud in places, and the guitar(s) are lost way down in the mix.

* Tune that guitar. Don't buzz the strings so much.

That is exactly what I have been saying all along. You don't know how hard that is to get across. Thanks for listening!

Little Games

your lyrics are great !!!!!

you have a dead string on your guitar .... I noticed that right off the bat ... :)

I really think you should take the shaker out ... it is distracting ....

with a little work this could be a great duet !!!!

Thank you lanac, appreciate your listening and advice! and compliment! Also, thank you dobro for your advice. We need all the guidance we can get, believe me.

I gotta say though that this recording was an experimental kind of thing. We were doing some stuff with accoustic guitars and percussion. Also, it was a one time take with no tracking abilities or hardware. In other words no way to work with individual mixing. So we just sang and played the thing with everything running straight to the mixer and 'slapped' right smack on the CD via home CD recorder.

Again, thank you for your time :)

p.s. guys - I don't know what to do about the out of tune, dead string guitar thing. We have tried to tell the guy that it is indeed noticeable. But the buzzing the string thing, he claims, is a certain technique of his. aarrggg!

WOW

My hats off to you then .. you are ahead of Randal and I .. lol

I have the software it takes but I have no idea how to use it ....

we are wanting to get a mixing board and hopefully thanks to this site .. I will get some help with it when I do get set up !!!

My advice when you decide to get a mixer, which you will definately need, is the Mackie gig mixer. Has built in effects and EQ, built in pre amps, four subouts etc.... Works for both home studio mixing or live mixing.

Of course, there are many routes to take with home recording and this site is great with many people who can advise you on the 'tried and true'.

T,
Nice song. With the one-shot recording method in mind I won't reiterate the above comments on mixing. I've done some of that 'dead man' mixing before, sometimes it works, sometimes it sux, really tough to get it right.

But the tuning and buzzing --AARGH-- :(

Mebbe you should print this thread out and show it to the offender. The guys I work with get a little numb hearing the same thing from the same person to the point where they just don't listen. When someone from the outside steps in and says the EXACT same thing, it somehow carries some weight.

hmmmm

The guy at the music store is trying to talk us into this one called TASCAM ?? I think ...

and he is also trying to get us to spend 500$ on a condensor microphone ...

we have had friends tell us we can get decent recordings with our gig mics ..lol.. I am so confused and torn about all this ....

this is a lot of money ... and I want to make sure I do the right thing .. yanno ??

thanks so much for the advice!! Lana

@2:33 the back-up dude..dudette? sounded a little like Neil Young...was that you? What kind of mic are you using? I tought the back-up's sounded right in your mix, the lead guy seemed a bit up close in the mic at times..too me anyway, but sounded good. At the very least try and get a better guitar going on, that would do wonders,,not that he couldn't play by no means just well you've already been told :) . Great job, and glad you made it to the party;)

Gig mics vs condensers... (OT)

Lana,
Spend some time in the mic forum. Tons of opinions on that topic. You can get by with gig mics if they're SM57's or 58's or the like. An LD condenser can help, but then you get in to all the ambient/background noise issues.

I'd suggest you get things going with the gig mics, get used to recording for a bit, then go try out all the condensers in your $range, see which you like. If you can borrow one to demo in your normal recording space, then you can really see...

THANKS

Thank you for the advice .. Sorry for kind of takin over your thread ... -shrugs ...

I didntmean to do that ... Lana

Thanks for listening Queue, i am honestly thinking about printing out these posts and giving them to both the lead and rhythm guitarists. :(

Thanks to you too David, the guy singing the lead in the song is also the songwriter. He is especially talanted in that area, and he is the rhythm guitarist. We use EV mics. I am the female backup vocalist. :)

hi... Good job, considering the circumstances...one shot deal, stubborn guitarist(guitar player not listening...how odd). Nice song. Would sound real nice tracked and mixed properly.

Teresa, I assume that's you singing. In any case the female vocal is by far the best part performance-wise. I also think it's a very good song. As for the rest of the production, I'd start over, from the percussion up. As for the guitars and such, it's a shame when something drags down a very worthwhile effort.

You seem to understand the sound/quality you want - don't settle for anything less. If those around you are disinterested, take action.

Keep it goin'.

Thank you for the compliments and advice everyone! And thank you psmith66 for complimenting my vocals. I am very shy and not very fond of my singing. The guys wouldn't let me sing very often and when they did they always had to sing over my vocals. We are kinda all split up now and taking a breather from each other. The lead singer told me before he left that maybe i could take the time to gain more confidence and therefore be an asset to his songs. So, i am going to work on that, but it still kind of stung especially when i wanted to tell him he needed to do some work on his own singing and guitar playing.

t

Perhaps this isn't the proper place to say this, but I'm getting the impression (obviously based on limited info) that you should indeed take some time to gain confidence - but rather than serve your inferiors, find some new musicians to "collaborate" with. Again, this is just my two cents without seeing the whole picture.

But if that mp3 is any indication, you should consider my comments. Creative bickering is one thing, but having to tolerate toneless, uninspired guitar playing is unacceptable. Plus, IMO you sing better than the "lead" singer (at least on this tune).

Hope I haven't been out of line. :)

Not out of line at all psmith66; i appreciate your advice and take it as a compliment. You are already helping to boost my confidence. :)

oh man Langeyt ...

Dump those fools ...

as far as the guitar string ....lmaoo .. tell him he needs a new set of strings .... oh man .. a technique .... lol sorry I am not laughing at you ... it is just laughable that he said that .... lol

I agree with what patti said as well ........

self confidence is something gained through positive thinking.... Lana

Hey Langley, help me out here...what do I have to do get something to play on Nowhereradio? I wanted to hear some of DW's work also and kept getting this message asking if I wanted to download windows media player? Is that the only player the site supports?:(
