not the playing...just the recording. haha.

i've got 2 sdc's doing hard left and right. i know some people would rather have an xy because that's not how you hear a piano, but i like to have it really up front when its the focal of the song.

there's a ldc center but turned down because i liked the color just not the loss of stereo.

all i have is two 991's and a 990, so sorry i'm cheap.

one of them i was more on the strings and higher with the ldc, one i was farther back with the sd's and lower on the ld. obviously upped the pre on that one. i didn't like the high's i was getting, and instead of eq, i wanted to position mics and levels.

hmmm...i just clicked the links...

do they not work for you guys?

i thought it needed a little cut in the mids. i took out some with a sorta wide q at around 390hz.

how could i do this physically? is there proxemity effect on condensers?

i think the sound is good, but there are too much "clicks" some comes from the taping on the piano and some i dont know where they come from, try to place the mics differantly maybe to avoid those

Maybe a little boost over the 2-4khz might give it more brightness

Wow i now realize though, that a plugin will never be able to make something even half sounding like a piano, there are many things out there, but at least i never could get something that sounds real

yeah...that's hammer noise.

which clip was it most apparent in? there are 2 different mic positions. i got this piano for free. i just had to tune it and fix some hammers. one hammer makes a little noise when returning. another thing may be that i'm primarily a classical guitarist with long finger nails. they make clicky noises when i play at times

i think i have my piano sound good. its for indie, so some noises are a good thing

and yeah...when we were taking the piano downstairs to the basement..people were like...you could just get a nice keyboard.

i've heard nice keyboards going to reason etc...just not the same.

finger nails

It sounds more like finger nails tapping on the keys.

What type of piano is it? sounds kinda like an old upright it has a very pleasing mellow sound. If so then you must be micing from the top. Maybe you could use some type of isolation device between the keyboard and mics to reduce the tapping sound.

yep. i got the piano from someone and i checked the tuning dates to find the oldest. 5/7/49 seems to be the first time it was tuned. so it's gotta be old old. its a witzel. it also says drachmann chicago. it is very mellow, and when i cut those 390hz's i think i lost a bit of my mid sound. it is a preference, and i may take just a slight less just to give it more mellow mids.

i can see if i can drape something between the mic stands to isolate my long fingernails on my right hand.

thanks for the responses, though few

Is that also a player piano?

Does it actually indicate location of manufacture? If it was manufactured in Chicago, it was actually built sometime between 1906 and 1917 (you could have almost a 100 year old piano there). If it was built in Indiana or elsewhere, then it was built sometime after 1917.

wow. an antique?

i got it from my highschool swim coach for nothing.

yeah. it says witzel chicago. no indications of indiana. her aunt...sister...something was a good pianist and this was her practice piano.

Well, I'm not an expert on the subject by any means. I just read you mention that it said "Drachmann Chicago" and that rang a bell somewhere in the back of my head and decided to do a quick search or two. The information I got came mainly from this appraisal for another Drachmann paino:

All I really know is that you might want to look into it a little bit more. Who knows what you may have; it may be a dime a dozen, but maybe not.

i just looked for more tuning dates and i saw another one that distinctly says

"DEC 27/15"

i was pretty suprised! too bad this thing is probably never gonna come out of this basement.

Well, if you're ever interested in finding out just what you have sitting in your basement and don't feel like hauling it out to Antiques Roadshow :), expert appraisals are available for $20 by filling out a simple web form with the piano brand, type and serial number at
