Well, this is my FIRST POST to this bbs and I'm already looking for punishment. I have 5 songs posted to http://www.mp3.com/Castrato that I recorded myself and feature mainly myself. Give a listen to "I'm Seeing Colors" or "Exiled and Licking Frogs" and let me know what you think. Those are the new tracks. You can compare them to one of my first "And Finally Something" to see how far I've come.

All songs were recorded in my apartment with a Gadget Labs Wave8/24 and Cakewalk (with varying degrees of compatibility issues). I have a few somewhat crappy mics and plug the guitar directly into the mixer a lot since micing a Rivera S120 half stack isn't much of an option with neighbors upstairs. Enjoy....I think.

I listened to "Colors". You have a concept and the song has potential. As you point out, plugging directly into the mixer is limiting your tone. More importantly, the guitar and drums are totally out of rhythm. It's partly that he's a terrible drummer, and partly that you're not staying with him. Anyway, that problem really jumps out and makes it difficult to appreciate the song.

Yeah, I know the beat totally falls apart in the middle "bridge" part. Thats what you get when you do one dry run of a song you've never played before and then record quickly so the neighbors upstairs don't bust down your door. Oh well. Its sort of grown on me though (a little) how it sounds totally f$*&ed up and disjointed and then comes back together for the ending. Thanks for your coments though.

I really like the song. YOu definitely need to do another recording of it, either more in practice (and therefore in time) or well... You figure out the options.

I liked the vocals a lot, and I would really like to hear that bridge turn into a longer jam, breaking from the light, airy feel into a tight groove, but still keeping some of that open feel. Hard to explain, but I'm thinking maybe of a Widespread Panic type thing happening before you come back into the end.

Anyway... cool tune. :)

Keep working at it

gnarled, I listened to "I'm Seeing Colors" and there are some good parts there. As mentioned by others and yourself, the main negative aspect was the sync falling apart between the musicians, but believe me, I've been there before too. I kinda liked the guitar tones, so it's not as bad as I had imagined it would be going straight into the board. Everything sounded pretty clean, and I could hear all the parts well. Keep it up, you're getting there! I use a Gadget Labs card and Cakewalk too. Keep those tunes comin! bOb

Thanks for all the comments. I'm moving out of my aparment into a house next week.....let the rock begin! Anyway, I should have some new material in a couple weeks. Just got a tube mic pre and a compressor too. Fun. Thanks again.
