Thread title says it all, unleash your thoughts on every aspect of the Yamaha MD8 Minidisk Multi-track recorder.

Yo Heavy Water Atomic One:

MD8? Plus side: Easy to use out of the box, discs are durable, no waiting for the tape to rewind, and the unit is compact and portable.

Minus Side:

Final sound quality just doesn't make it compared to most HD units. As well, headroom doesn't even come close to HD units.

Compressed sound.

Common EQ control -- nothing special.

I still have my MD8 hooked up but haven't used it since I figured out how to get around my 2816.

Keep your mass from going critical.

:D :D :p :p

Hello, I just ousted my Sony MDM4 or whaterver it was couple months ago and got a brand spankin' new VS890 for 800.00!!!. The Mini Disc sound was tooooo compressed. The Sony compared to a "true" hard disc recorder is like night and day. Well, depending on how critical your ears are.
Mini Disc recorders are real high quality don't get me wrong, but I go to what my ears tell me. I have samples of one of my recordings on a MD compared to what I have on HD. There is a BIG difference. Save a couple more dollars and get a "true" HD recorder. That is my 2 cents.

I also don't dig

how you can't copy discs. If you run out of room for multiple mixes on a single 17-minute recording-time disc, that's it. Or, not being able to back up a disc, too, is a pain.

Also, it kind of sucks that it only comes in black.
:) LOL

My list...in no particular order...

Outside of the ATRAC compression issues:

Fixed Band EQ with +/- 15 db....The mids are sweepable, but I have no way to tell what frequency....you have to totally use your ears when adjusting any eq. Not what Im use to...

Only 2 XLR inputs....

Only 2 inserts...they happen to be on the XLR input channels

NO digital outputs of any sort....

Preamps are sorta noisy...

Cut-N-Paste is very finicky...

Overheats too easiy in summer/warm climates....causes disk errors, usually unrecoverable...

It would be really cool to make a hybrid D/AAW, one that has a analog mixer with ADAT tape slot and only 8 tracks...Most of the HD recorders all have digital mixers...I want knobs on my mixer..a different knob for each function..not one knob for all the functions.

Peace,
Dennis

I liked mine, but If you ask too much of them they will crap on you..

I remember wanting to layer 10 backing vocals, and I only had 5 empty tracks to do it with, so I did a little bit of bouncing...

By the time I was done the bouncing, there were weird artifacts in my backing vocal mix...

I emailed Yamaha the woman said that it is not "master quality" and don't expect too much out of it.. It is just a "notepad" for the amatuer home recorder...

I was pissed... I wish they explained it that way in their ads that promised the world...

But.. for "notepad", it was good..

Oh....

And, hard to find and expensive media was another problem..

Hey Vox go to Waldos and listen to my MP3 I did, listen to revelation and tell me how it sounds compared to what your notepad results were.

Ive found that the term artifacts don't apply to the MD8 when bouncing, artifact implies there is a remnant...which there usually isnt. Its the ATRAC truncating overlap frequencies, so the tails aren't lined up with the generating frequency. If I can avoid bouncing Im better off.
The adds were pretty deceptive and still are in the mail order places trying to get rid of them. Its great for a sketch pad, when I can afford something else Ill just dump the songs as a scratch in stereo and redo everything. I was really bummed when I paid $1090 for it new and 3 months later you could get them for $600 to $700 on ebay...but I learned so much in that 3 months...

Dennis

Oh, Yeah? I bought the MD4 when they first came out and paid $1100 for the damned thing! (That was before I started hanging around here).

When I say artifact.. I just meant weird little specks and pops were appearing...

But yeah sounds like you and me were experiencing the same thing..

Joe

PS.. Leave me a link.. Don't make me search for you over at NWR ...Im far to lazy for that...:D

Heh heh, I knew what you meant Vox, I was being smarty pants :0)... I really screwed up once, I tried to bounce 8 onto 1 once, since it was monitored incorrectly I erased the other tracks before playback....Oh...Fuuuuuuudge! I think I showed remarkable composure..by not taking a chainsaw to it...

Here's the link...as a reference for the md8 thread(disclaimer for posting mp3's outside the mp3 forum)

Sorry BuffyBob about the $1100 for the MD4....I fell like a got a real bargain now....

.

I use my MD8 regularly to make rhythm tracks to play Pedal Steel Guitar with.
I use a drum machine and I play bass and acoustic guitar.
I mix down to a portable Sony minidisk recorder.
The thing works great.
All it was ever supposed to be was a step up from the Tascam 488, right. I mean one step up in quality and ease of use from 8-track cassette recorder. I think it works fine for this type of stuff.
I don't use any of the features except record/play and playback.
FWIW the thing works perfectly.
I get disks at Guitar Center. I got 10 for $100 although the last time I was there they were $11.50ea.

You are right... But unfortuantely us suckers who are unhappy with the unit were sucked in by Yamaha's ads promising it to be the cats-ass of all home-recording....
