Line6 ux2 and protools 8

I have a ux2 connected to pt using spdif. When I click record on the track using spdif as the input , the meter moves but no sound comes out. When I start to record on the track , pt sees the information and plays it back properly (I can now hear the audio recorded) I can't seem to hear what I'm playing while I'm recording even though the audio is actually recorded. Any ideas greatly appreciated .

I find it annoying. Setting it one way lets you hear whilst you record and the other way lets you hear whilst just playing along with the track.
I pretty much always want both.

Strange , my UX2 has been acting up ever since I got this new Windows 8 pc. It worked well and now has started dropping the audio everyday. Reboots fix it.

The meters all work in Real PLayer or the other software players, but the ux2 vu's don't move, and theres no errors...and no sound.

reboot and it all works again!

the only activity seems to be based upon Windows Updates wanting a restart to update.
maybe a coincidence or another Windows PITA issue.

Telecaster dies this sound familiar?
