Line Out / Line in

Hello, I seem to be having a problem with my very simple setup. I'm trying to record my guitar amp (Marshall VS100) by connecting the line out on the amp to the line in on my soundcard (SB AWE32). No matter how quietly I play, everything I record sounds distorted, like I'm overdriving the input on the card. I'm playing clean by the way.
Now, if I hook the headphone output of my amp into the line in, it works fine, but the amp's speaker is disabled.

Does anyone know why this is happening? If so, is there a way I can rig the line out to my soundcard? I've tried two different cards and I still get the same problem. Thanks.

Have you checked the the level of that line out from The Marshall on another (non-PC) audio system? Plug it into a stereo like you would a CD player and see if it's still distorting.

I tried plugging it into my laptop, and it sounded fine. A little quiet but good enough to record some ideas.

One more idea. I also own a SB AWE 32 that had a line in take a shit- different symptoms (I think it was the jack) so try this:

Get another line output ( I suggest a CD player) and plug THAT into the line in on the SB card.

One more thought:

>Now, if I hook the headphone output of my amp into the line in, it works fine, but the amp's speaker is disabled.

Maybe the outputs on the Marshall are mislabeled? Headphone signals are much higher than line level.
