Line Level Preamp?

I think what I need is a line level preamp (if there is such a thing.) I am running a sound module (Roland JV-1010) into an M-Audio Omni I/O (& then into a Delta 66 audio card), where MIDI tracks are recorded as audio tracks in Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. The audio line outs from the sound module doesn't have the signal strength to record an audio track of sufficient gain when it's connected to the line input of my audio interface. The recorded audio track with this signal path is weak (& probably lacking in bit depth.) If I connect the sound module line outs to the Mike/Inst input of the interface, I have great gain & can record a strong audio track, but buzz gets introduced (I think because of impedance mismatch.) I can "noise gate" the buzz out of the track in Sound Forge "Sonic Foundry", but I should't have to do that. Is there any way to preamp a line level signal to a sound card with clean "hot" gain? Is there such a device as a line level preamp? Thanks.

Do you have the line inputs set to -10 in the M-audio delta control panel?

Holy *!~#^!~*!!!

GARAK,

Yeah, I did (I had the outputs & inputs set at -10db.) I switched them all to +4; &...boom!!! The gain on the audio shot up like gangbusters (& the signal is cleaner.) This is perplexing to me, because I was under the impression that +4 was set up for pro gear with a "hot" signal; & actually attenuated the gain. And the really suprising aspect was that setting the output to +4 seemed to make more of a difference in signal strength than did setting the inputs (to +4.) I've only checked Audio gain thus far. I'm about to check MIDI levels now; & try recording a MIDI track to Audio. I guess with +4, I should start by checking line out (on the sound module) to line in (on the Omni I/O) to see if I have sufficient gain enough to record an Audio track at 0db (line to line is much cleaner than line to preamp.) Thanks for the tip. I really appreciate it. I'll check back later with results on MIDI levels. Thanks again.

Same Levels

Garak,

MIDI levels utilizing line inputs on Omni I/O are still weaker than Audio (even at +4.) Looks like I need a line level preamp.
