Line Input problems

I'm plugging my electric guitar directly into the line in jack, but the sound only comes out of one speaker, and when I record it only records in one channel instead of bothe the left and right channel. The mic is plugged into the mic jack (it's a computer mic) and it comes through both channels just fine, but whenever I plug anything into the line in, it only comes through one channel... any suggestions?

Line in plugs are on soundblaster type soundcards are stereo plugs. If you insert a mono plug into that, one channel (the one on the rign on the plug) gets shorted out onto the ground (the sleeve of the plug), and only the other channel makes it through (the tip). The computer sees this as what it is: signal on the left, silence on the right, and therefore, that's what you hear.

The mic input, on the other hand, is not stereo. The sleeve is still ground, and the tip is still signal, but the ring carries provides a (small) amount of power for the mic to work. The computer knows this, and therefore sends the signal to the left and right channels... hence you hear it centred on playback.

i bow to you my white night.. you have answered the question that has been nagging my mind for a month because i too was having that same problem.. and needless to say i emailed my soundcard manufacturer a week and a half ago and have yet to get a responce..

as we americans say :

I am using a stero plug, but still only getting one channel. When I use a mono plug there is no sound at all. I've checked the balance and it's set dead center. I've tried this on two different computers with two different sound cards. Also, while I'm thinking about it, do you have any recommendations for sound cards? What considered to be some of the best? Where can I find some reviews? Thanx for you help.
