i have an analog camcorder and i want to capture both audio & video onto my computer, my video card has the ability to capture video, but that leaves me with no audio captured.........can i plug my audio cable from the camcorder into the "line in" on my sound card??? and if not , what is the " line in" used for?????

I don't see why not. I have limited experience with video capture, but I believe the software will normally use the system's sound card to capture audio if audio inputs aren't provided on the video capture card.

"line in" uses

thank you for your reply alexis machine , i already know that the capture software can use whatever audio i choose such as my sound card.............my question is about the "line in" on the sound card.......is the "line in" meant to accept typical rca jacks like the audio cables from a camcorder???? or what are other uses for the "line in"??

Line In means it accepts a line level signal. The standard consumer soundcard Line In is a single stereo 1/8" minijack that accepts a stereo signal from a stereo 1/8" miniplug. So if you had L and R stereo RCA audio line outs from your camcorder, you would need a cable that has two RCA jacks on one end and one stereo 1/8" miniplug on the other.

thanks

thanks a lot alchuck, that answers my question!!!

figured it out

i went to radio shack, they have an adapter that u can plug rca audio jacks into, then that adapter can go into a 1/8" "line in", so that is what i needed

That will work, though a hardwired cable is preferable. (Radio Shaq should have those too.)
