I just got this a couple of weeks ago. I haven't had much experience with Line 6 stuff in the past but I want to do some scaled back demos and practice from my office. It's easier than firing up a bunch of recording gear.

Anyway, I got a new guitar the other day and figured I'd try it and my Line 6 (UX1) at the same time. I already had everything installed. I plugged in, tuned up, and started messing around. First off, this software sounds horrible. There's too much bass in the default patches and it's muddy as all get out. I know, I know...you're supposed to tweak these things. But, the "amp knobs" don't respond how my real amp does. I tried the Dual Treadplate or whatever because I have a Dual Rec. I dialed in the same settings I use on my amp and it was ridiculously muddy and bassy.

So...I know there are ways of tweaking this stuff pretty good. I've read about them. From adding impulses to blah blah. I just don't know where to look.

Tips? Tricks? I just want something respectable. The tone, or lack thereof, was killing the vibe for me.

See...a respectable sound is possible! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxNFPEQVshk

Since you were trying it with a new guitar - did you try the guitar through an amp to see what the guitar sounds like? Or try your old axe with the Pod, and adjust it for desired sound? You've got 2 unknowns at one time, hard to figure out what to adjust first. Also - what are you using for monitors/speakers? They are going to sound a lot different than guitar amp speakers.

It was a PRS and my main guitar is a PRS, so I don't expect a deviation from the norm there. I was using some closed studio phones. I'm not a rookie at recording by any means. I just usually stick a mic in front of an amp and go through some nice pre's, etc. I know quite well that I'm not going to hear it like it comes out of a real cab. I want and NEED something that allows me to just plug in in my office and rattle off some demos and do some practice. I don't want anything spectacular and I sure don't expect it. Just something respectable. I think that's a reasonable expectation. :D

I've started doing some researching on impulses and such using SIR2 and Reaper from my office. It's a bit of a buzz kill but the tone I was getting was totally unacceptable.

Play with it man, it took me a while to get used to it, but I still find Pod Farm more useful than NI Guitar Rig, just takes time I guess. Depending on what packs you have with the Farm, there are literally hundreds of different Amp/Cab combinations, some of which are not made of mud ;)

Sounds right to me. It's not a real amp, and you shouldn't expect it to behave like one.

In my personal experience, good sounds can be achieved starting from a blank patch and building it up. Pre-defined patches are usually over the top; too much distortion, compression etc.
I found that it does certain sounds really well, and they tend to revolve around a medium level of distortion. Clean sounds - forget it, not realistic at all. Uber-heavy sounds I can't comment on 'cause I haven't been there.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
FM

I even use the mic preamp emulators in the silly thing ;) quite useful overall...
