All you have is now
They will start the revolution this July...
Ya heard it here first..
Revolutionary proprietary wireless digtal band waves.
Built into mic Mic modeling
1 mic fits all..

I know the purist we'll balk but for the Joe Schmoes of the world the built-in mic modeling will be huge ..

The proprietary wireless mic channel thing they will own.

My high school bro Kenny Smith ( The idiot that got me into keyboards) did the video...

[video=youtube;<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="https://www.youtube.com/v/Homvzw4FieU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="https://www.youtube.com/v/Homvzw4FieU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>]video[/video]

Very interesting.

I wouldn't trust it just yet though. Their amp modelling isn't that convincing, never mind mic modelling.

Hey TAE ....Pretty cool do you have any other info like price and what kind of battery, and which microphones they emulate?

More importantly... what kind of emulation? Is it a convolution with impulses? Or simply matching the frequency response with some EQ which would be fairly rubbish?

Here's the press release...

LINE 6 ANNOUNCES XD-SERIES DIGITAL WIRELESS MICROPHONE SYSTEMS Bookmark and Share

Four new digital wireless microphone systems offer unmatched wireless performance, simplicity and sound quality – worldwide

CALABASAS, Calif.—June 9, 2010—Line 6, Inc. (line6.com), the industry leader in digital modeling technology for music-creation products, announced today its new XD-series line of digital wireless microphone systems.

“When it comes to digital technology, Line 6 is always one step ahead” remarked Don Boomer, Microphone Product Line Manager at Line 6. “We recognized long ago that analog wireless technology was showing signs of diminished reliability and quality. That’s why the XD-series systems feature our fourth-generation digital wireless technology when other companies are on their first. The result is unmatched wireless performance, simplicity and sound quality worldwide – license free.”

The XD-series line includes two handheld cardioid microphone systems, XD-V30 and XD-V70, and two beltpack systems, XD-V30L and XD-V70L.

All XD-series digital wireless systems feature exclusive Line 6 digital technologies. New DCL™ (Digital Channel Lock) and PDP™ (Proprietary Data Placement) technologies provide encoded digital transmissions, govern against AF interference and audio artifacts, and ensure reliable operation in hostile RF environments.

Whereas analog wireless systems’ audio may degrade with distance, Line 6 digital wireless technologies ensures zero audio degradation. XD-series digital wireless microphone systems feature full-quality audio specs (10 Hz – 20 kHz RF frequency response, up to >120 dB dynamic range, and 24-bit digital conversion) to the limits of their ranges.

XD-V30 and XD-V70 take advantage of Line 6’s leadership position in digital modeling technology. They feature high-quality microphone models (one in XD-V30; seven in XD-V70) inspired by the sounds of the world’s leading live-sound microphones. These models provide familiar sounds to performers, audiences and front-of-house engineers.

All four digital wireless systems broadcast in the 2.4GHz band, which successfully avoids interference from high-powered sources. The 2.4GHz band also allows for license-free use worldwide.

XD-V30 and XD-V30L: 6 channels, 100-foot range, 1/3U rack receiver with internally mounted antennas, metal and polycarbonate chassis, carrying case.

XD-V70 and XD-V70L: 12 channels, 300-foot range, 1/2U rack receivers with built-in antenna distribution system, heavy-duty metal chassis.

XD-V30 Digital Wireless Microphone System - $349.99 (estimated retail price)
XD-V30L Digital Wireless Beltpack System - $349.99 (estimated retail price)
XD-V70 Digital Wireless Microphone System - $499.99 (estimated retail price)
XD-V70L Digital Wireless Beltpack Microphone System - $499.99 (estimated retail price)

One thing that I gues got edited out of the video is

that on the wireless side of this unit you can remove the line 6 mic cartridge and screw in yours ..swappable and wallah... your sm57 is now wireless

This is another one of those things with too many options. Their amps have too many options there are microphone preamps out there that are "modeling" and have too many options. Why do I want a piece of gear that can do 1,000,000 tones just OK when I could have a piece of gear that does 1 tone GREAT???

Do you think a client that is paying you by the hour is going to be that thrilled when you're sitting there flipping through your microphone models or your microphone preamp models??

Another useless thing that is going to be in the hands of amateurs like their amps.

Hardly useless to us cash strapped "Amatuers" trying to improve our results.

And really...that's the only market that Line 6 might(?) "turn the mic world upside down" for...the newbs, who keep thinking that for $99 they can get the same thing that pros spend $9000 on. :D

NONE of Line 6 amp models sound just like the real thing...they just get close on some, and the rest just sound like...well, like Line 6 digital models. ;)
Neither will their mics...but I agree that some people will go for them who need wireless mics that have more than one flavor, though I'm not sure why that's going to be a big selling point for newb/amateur end users...?
Why would you want/need to keep switching your mic "flavor" for stage gigs...??? You find the mics that work for your needs...and then you generally use the same ones all the time.
Unless we are talking huge productions, and *big stage* gigs…and/or where you need to do all that singing/dancing.
I don’t much care for using wireless.
Maybe I’m old fashioned…but I like cables. :)

And you are not going to use wireless in a studio environment.

Why do I want a piece of gear that can do 1,000,000 tones just OK when I could have a piece of gear that does 1 tone GREAT???

because one mic isn't great on all applications. and most home recorders can't afford any mic that i would consider to be "great", let alone a locker full of them.

this will serve its purpose, much like the amp modellers do.

And when you see the STARTS AT $$,$$$.$$, you'll change your mind?

I agree too much on too little. At a minimum I would assume that battery life sucks. But go ahead stop the 3 hour show every twenty minutes to swap batteries for five minutes. More power to you. And the riot police you'll have to hire.

Making the assumption that they are all that. But then again, if they are, one piece of kit that's not bolted to the floor in some fashion, and will ultimately grow legs. Or just break in the presence of humidity at the worst possible time.

seems like this might be targeted towards the home recorder, although i watched none of that video and read no literature about it.

It's a neat ideal. It looks to be a pretty huge mic. But just in concept, unless each mic has a unique ID that is somehow security locked, it's begging to be toyed with if used in large venues. Just try to stop Kanye now from influencing someone else's event / moment. He wont even have to be in the same room. And then there's durability issues. Since sensitive electronics can/WILL be dropped. Not to mention latency issues if used live. Plus that battery issue. Probably a nice item small scale (home recording). But do you really need wireless in the home? Granted that not having to buy a $50 cable (or find/make one) might be perk.

Its A nice idea, the main flaw is the wireless system, like others have said if you use it live its fairly useless because I cant really think of applications where you need to change your mic through a song, and if anything needs to be changed its usually an effect added by what I belive would be the sound engineer. Its got a good target audience though, I would think of buying one if I didn't have my heart set on some nice shiny traditional mics. but the fact is guys like myself who dont have the largest budget in the world to even afford a £200 mic, Its something that can reach out, but then comes the wireless part! who on earth wants to do their recording professional or not through a wireless system? You cant beat wires! even in a live situation, call me stupid but I just dont trust people who are using wireless systems. You gotta admit, if you see some guy playing guitar with no cables coming out the thourght crosses your mind that he isn't actually playing

Well, I won't bash it until I've used it. It could be a usable tool, a pointless gimmick, or anywhere in between. But- by and large, I hate every wireless mic I've used. Digital wireless is a fundamentally better concept than analog, and may be more resistant to interference. As far as the mic models go, the jury is out on that one.-Richie

???

"Serve its purpose"...what purpose?

I agree, most HR folks might not be able to afford real exepnsive mics...
...but how does one inexpensive mic solve any of that?
You still ain't got nothing that's great... :D

And again...why would anyone want to use a wireless mic for recording?
No...this is for live/stage use...so I still don't get the need for multi-mic modeling...???

You seriously can't think of any reason that a pod might be convenient? none?

i can't think of any reason why anyone would need something like that for a live performance. otoh, it's just the first wave of a new technology. it won't work live.
