Limit on -3DB when recording

Hello,

I have two laptops with cool edit. On one laptop (XP) recording works perfect. I did about 500 tracks already (ripped from my vinyl)

My new laptop (vista) worked fine for several tracks. I think I hit a wrong button, because when I am recording now, the bars and waveform are cut off at -3DB.

When I open a file which was recorded with the other laptop, it looks fine. The waveforms have normal peaks.

I compared the cool edit settings of both laptops, but cannot find any differences.

Anyone an idea what is wrong?

I'm not sure if this is the problem but if you use your wheel on your mouse over the edit view (up and down / not click it) then you can change the view of the db.

Thanks for your help. It is not in the view. but the actual recording. When I open the same file on my other laptop (which the good one) it also cuts the edges off at -3DB

When I record the the track on that laptop, it does not

:(
 
What sound card do you have? If you are using on board sound perhaps you need to open the control panel up and make sure you have the input set all the way up?

Hi

Using an external EMU 0202 USB sound card. The same one as I use at the other laptop.

When I open a file which was recorded in the "good" laptop the wave view is display normally on the laptop I have the recording limit :(

I cannot post a link yet of pics of the view, because I have not made more than 5 posts
 
sample rate?

Check what sample rate you are recording at. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that recording at a higher sample rate gives you increased headroom. Also check if your recording at the same resolution 16bit? 24bit?
