hi people... i was wondering what these are called and where i could possibly get my hands on something like them...

what i want is a strobe light that is sound activated.. so it turns on whenever a string or drum is hit..

any helper peoples out there?

:D Most any lighting/DJ/sound for club type catalogues have these, most strobes are not sound activated, one would have to purchase some type of triggering device to do what you are thinking.
Another way to time strobes is slow the rate down to the timing of the music, the DJ thats playing music at club usually has control over this.
If you live in a large city any sound/light supply store can help on this.

I would definitely NOT recommend putting a strobe into your lighting system. They give some people seisures, and make lots of others physically uncomfortable in other ways (they make me feel sick to my stomach, for example). We had one in our lighting system and got so many complaints that we eventually just took it out. Horrible invention.... If you do decide to get one, though, you can pick them up at Radio Shack for cheap.

But, to be productive, I can tell you that we have a rackmount lighting control rig that is sound sensitive. Takes up one rack space and hooks up to a controller box that the lights plug into. You can set which lights you want to be sound controlled, and you can also set the sensitivity and rate of the sound control. Works pretty well, but we use the buttons on the front of the rack unit to manually trigger the flash pots (the really bright lights) and a few others for effect, so that they don't just come on all the time.

Hope this helps,
Ryan

Strobes are cool you just have to use them tastefully. Shine them on the band low and from the side instead of pointing them right in the crowds faces. Nothing creates tension and excitement in a light show like a strobe can.

We have a strobe light in the studio's live room. You can also use it as a metronome to help or mess with the drummer.....lol

Many things can add just as much or more excitment as strobes. I get very annoied when I go to a show and the designer has 20-30 strobes up in the rig. I rarely use them for more than an occsional effect. I also would rather get my strobe effects (when I need them) from a moving light, as they can do SOMETHING else, and they can change colors. They are a bit out of your price range, but they are much cooler.

True but it's hard to beat a bunch of Data Flashes.

Well, but that was exactly my point. I think all the tours which have 20-30 AF-1000 Dataflashes are really fucking boring. Now, I see a lot more shows than most people, and I am a lot more critical of lighting shows (that being what I do for a living) but Dataflashes bore me to tears. I only really use Dataflashes for corporate shows where they want me to replicate lightning, and other similar effects.

Give me a dozen Mac 2000 (or maybe the new X-Spot Xtreme, which I have not yet seen), a dozen Studio Beam PCs, a MDG Hazer (or a Reel EFX DF-50, if you don't mind ear drum shattering noise), and a Whole Hog II, and I will give you a show that will blow you away.

Sure if it's an either/or situation I would take anything over a DataFlash. I've seen some cool installations with DataFlashes under dance floors and chasing along the trusses. They are simply one effect but there is no other way to get that exact same effect.

I did lighting for some electronica acts that said no strobes or smoke. Gee that's exciting, lol.
