Licensing music with ASCAP as a publisher

I recently had a song I licensed out to a label. It's already been published and released but the label told me when I register the title with ASCAP that I could put myself down as the publisher to get the other 50% of the royalties (yay!) I have no idea how to do this though. I assume the label hasn't registered the title with ASCAP yet other wise I don't think they would have told me I could put myself as the publisher. Do I need to actually start a publishing company and register my self as a publisher with ASCAP before I can register this title? This is my first time doing this I'm so confused. I hope somebody can help shed some light on the situation.

Have you written ASCAP and asked for guidance? I know their so-called "hotline" is hit or miss but you could always write them.
