Hi All,
I am trying to do some guitar / amp recording using the lexicon alpha recording interface -recording into reaper.

Setup:
Mic Share SM57
Amp engl

Connecting to the Mic input of the lexicon Alpha.

When I try to record the line volume is bearlay audible even when the amp is cranked right up! I have also used the Amos direct output to the mic input same issue!

I can hear the sound quite nicely through my headphones plugged into the lexicon headphone jack but the audio recording level is right out.

The other funny thing is if I plug in the the instrument direct line in the recording level is fine and can be conrolled nicely fine for acoustic recording...

Any ideas to get this mic level sorted out would be greatly appreciated.

Since you have tried the Engl D.O. into the mic input (exactly how?) with low level results I can only conclude that the input is faulty.

The 50dB mic gain of the Alpha IS on the low side, most AIs give 55-60dB these days, but I would have thought that fully cranked a loud guitar amp should give plenty of level nonetheless. If you tap the mic body does the clip LED flash on the Lexy? If not, something seriously wrong with that channel IMHO.

It is JUST possible that you have a setting wrong in Reaper, I have bought it but am not that familiar. Download Audacity and see what'appen. You cannot, AFAIK, have a setting wrong in Windows or the line input would also be low.

Dave.

Hi Dave thanks very much works perfectly in Audacity!! So must be a reaper setting will need to do some reading on reaper to fix.

Thanks very much for the suggestion

In Reaper, make sure that the track you want to record on has the right input selected.

^^ This^^ I wonder if what you are hearing as a very low input signal from the mic is the bleed through from the line-in input?

Are you using XLR to XLR for the mic connection?

Are you using the front, Chan2/mic controller to adjust the mic gain, and "barely audible" as in the headphones, or in Reaper?

Did you load the Lexicon Alpha drivers so Reaper can see the Alpha?
Alpha Driver v2.7 (Windows) | Lexicon Pro - Legendary Reverb and Effects

I have a couple of the Alphas. I mainly use them as A.I.s, into Reaper, from my channel strips. A few months ago as an experiment, I used it with my 57 (as ECC83 said "[it] IS on the low side) with usable results recorded into Reaper. So as Gecko and you said, it may just be a preference setting in Reaper that needs tweaked.
