Sent these to my son a week ago and today he has sent me some recordings. The attached clip is in his ground floor flat in Le Havre. Mics into a MOTU M4 and 1 mtr away. Not sure of the setup but I think he was going to try ORTF, 110dgr angle.

Others with much better hearing than I can perhaps tell me more but I am pretty sure the noise floor is the room? I don't detect any electronic noise?

Dave.

I can hear a little bit of hiss, but my head is pretty stuffed up, and the ears are ringing some today from sinuses. It's nothing intrusive, and I only heard it on the fade out section, nothing apparent during the guitar playing. It's much less that I used to hear from tape.

I also hear what sounds like water dripping somewhere. Maybe it was raining? Its really faint.

There's definitely noise there, but I'd guess it's environmental. I just did a normalize of the posted MP3 for a peak of -1.0, and attaching the "silence" at the end of the original - very obvious noise. Then, there's the MP3 after normalization and denoise (in iZotope Ozone). I'd want to try and find that noise source - could be lighting, dimmer switch stuff, but it also might be something that just more gain on the initial recording could make less obvious, if it's not coming in electronically.

Thanks Keith, can I be a pain and ask for clips to be 320k MP3s attached please? I CAN record them internally in Audacity (or via the M4) but in diagnosing noise I would rather not go through another "process".

His flat is bang on a fairly busy street and there are of course other flats so it is never going to be "Maida Vale"!

Dave.

I don't know if uploading 320k will stay unmodified, but I've tried. Here's a link to Google Drive folder with the WAV files.

Thank you Keith. Son has since sent me some noise tests, he keeps quiet with the mics on for 20 seconds then turns off phantom power on his A&H zed10, feeding 3/4 of the M4. The noise drops from about -55dB to better than -90dB! I have normalized it and there is a lot of bumping noise but definitely a periodic 'whirr' Could be his laptop's fan? He has a Tascam handheld recorder so I have suggested he goes on a "whirr hunt"!

I am fairly sure any mic/pre amp noise is well below his ambient level. This is the case I am sure for most home recordists.

Thanks again.
