I'm just curious. Seems we have a couple of people who were not around when this was last addressed.

Where do you keep your levels while recording on the MR8?

As high as possible without peeking? Midway?

I think I've been recording too quietly...?

levels

i get a good hot signal coming from my mixer, then keep the levels just below clipping, good and strong.

Yea, that's what I thought, and that's what is described in all literature I've read with regards to the MR8. I learned a bad habit from crappy monitors, and forgot to unlearn it when I got decent ones I think...

Live and learn and learn again..

As for the trim knob. With a dynamic microphone hooked straight to the MR8 you won't get adequate levels unless you crank it all the way up. If you are using an external mixer keep the trim knob turned all the way down and adjust with the mixer.

If you are only speaking of the levels on the MR8 screen it has been my experience if you don't try to get them to at least the half way mark the sound quality diminishes.

I have a mixer, but it's a powered mixer. It's okay to unplug the mains and monitor I've been told, but I have a short in one of my monitors which is a real pain, and the mixer is not overly easy to access the back of.

Otherwise I get all the bleed from the mains mixed in ever so slightly with my miked amp, so it's been kind of a compromise between a pretty strong signal from mixer and using some of the MR8's trim to get the levels up.

Looks like I'll be unplugging them after all...
