Is it ok to leave equiptment on for extended periods of time ?
how about 24/7 ??
THings like powered studio monitors ?
And sound card break out boxes ?
cause i know powering up and down all the time stresses the electronics right ?

If you have pro (read expensive) gear that is designed to withstand the rigours of 24/7, daily studio life (especially regarding heat dissipation), then it's pretty safe to leave everything on....... (although your hydro bill might hurt!)

A portastudio rig or equivalent with some outboard and monitors in a bedroom --- you're better off powering up/down as needed.......

My rule of thumb is (and it may be totally wrong-headed!) if it generates heat, turn it off when not in use.

Same here. Most of my gear isn't tip-top of the line, so I'll shut it off if it's not going to be used for a while.

Power ups and downs do stress the componenets though, so I keep those to a minimum and leave stuff on if it's only for a few hours.

Hmmm??

I might leave my stuff on from 5:00pm till midnight or longer, but at the end of the day.. shut it down, do it in the right order (starting at any amps and moving backward). that comes from a live point of view, but can be tranfered to studio.

I think Bruce pretty much summed it all up.
