Leaning towards Tascam 224

Hello,

After reading, studying (and consulting finances) it seems that I am leaning towards the Tascam 224 USB as a midi interface for a Kurzweil PC88MX and to also record audio tracks (one track at a time, maybe 2) into Cakewalk Home studio.

For $300, it seems like a worthwhile gamble. I was leaning towards a multitrack recorder (Like the fostex vf-160), but it was $900 and it doesn't seem to be a necessity for a newbie. Maybe a multitracker will be added later as I gain more experience/knowledge.

Couple of questions:

1.) I heard people warn about USB for audio, but I am looking at one track at a time (maybe two max) -- so do I have "nothing" to worry about?

2.) I am assuming that the 224 allows a Shure SM-58 to be plugged in w/o the need for an external pre-amp -- does anyone know any different?

3.) Any users out there of the 224 that may have any comments?

(Note: I have a Dell PC running ME, a dell laptop running windows 2000, have homestudio 2002, the Kurzweil, a Yamaha U-1 acoutic piano, bass, acoutic guitar and banjo. Most of the use will be for my wife's midi stuff, but will also record some guitar/banjo stuff -- will use the sm58 for now, but I guess at some point in time a nice condenser mic would be needed.)

Thanks in advance,

Kevin
