Layla 3G / Mackie Mixer question

I currently have a Gina 24/96 and want to pick up the Layla 3G. I am running the Mackie's main outs into the inputs of the Gina, which there are only 2 of (with no issues).

My questions are (sorry if they are long-winded):

The Mackie 1202VLZ has 4 channels with mic preamps on it. Would I just connect 4 input channels of the Layla to the 4 channel inserts (of the mic preamp channels) on the mixer? This combined with the 2 preamp inputs on the Layla 3G would give me 6 total preamp inputs correct?

Are there any instruments or mics suitable for recording direct into the interface without a mic preamp? (keyboards, etc.)

And finally, I have been a Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 user for the last 5 years or so and rather not upgrade to Sonar (at least not right now). Are there any known compatability issues with the new Layla 3G and an older version of Cakewalk like PA9?

Thanks for listening!
