I'm thinking of getting a layla 20, I've found some good deals on it. Am I going to notice any quality differences from a 24 bit card? I'm interested in the layla because of all the inputs/outputs and the 20 bit falls in my price range. If I go with a 24 bit card I'll probably only get 2-4 inputs.

Thanks

Layla 20 is a good card, probably you wont notice any sound difference in the quality. Also I think that just the SPDIF digital signal is 24 bit in that card, so if you get an external analog to digital conveter, then you may get the quality of Echo LAYLA 24 without spending a fortune.

2 things:

1. It is not listed on the Echo site as a current product. I learned my lesson well and don't even bother with anything that is not currently being made.

2. Drivers do exist for 2000/XP on their website, but are only beta drivers. Discontinued cards usually are not a priority as far as updated drivers go.

Echo do not abandon users of their old soundcards unlike some other companies.

eg the layla20 driver for winxp is the same version as those for the layla24 and was available within a few weeks of the layla24 update.

i'm thinking of doing the same thing... hrmm. just to get started recording bands... and i can upgrade later... or do i really need to go for a 24 bit soundcard before i try recording anyone else?

I can't speak for the 20 but I have the 24 and love it all to pieces.

AS far as price range: American Musical Supply has a payment plan where you can break it up into 3 installments comes to like $233.00/month That might help take the sting off a new one
