Over the past couple of days I've been trying to determine what my next upgrade should be. In choosing whether I should buy a pair of very nice pre's or a good console (soundcraft ghost) most here said I shoould go for the console.

However....

Another person has suggested that I upgrade to the MOTU HD896. He claims that my layla, at 110db s/n ratio is just barely giving me enough headroom; he made the general statement that 110db is neither here nor there (headroom wise). The suggestion was that the MOTU offered much more headroom and that a couple more db's in signal to noise ratio would be a huge difference. We went on the MOTU site and others, but were unable to find the s/n ratio for this unit... The improvement in sound from upgrading to the MOTU HD896 would be much greater than the updgrade from my mackie cfx mixer to the soundcraft ghost...or so this individual claims..

What do you all think? Is it a worthwhile upgrade? How much of a difference is, say 8-10 db in s/n??
