Well, that is an opinion.
About 5 years ago, me and the owner of a studio that I work at had about 30 different mic cables that we compared with the same mic/preamp/A/D. We used him playing a
acoustic guitar and singing into the one mic (AT 4050) through a Fosusrite Red 8 preamp, directly into a ADAT XT 20.
He did a very good job playing the performance the same way through each cables. Granted, there were some differences between takes. But, those differences didn't really have anything to do with "sound". But, you can argue that this wasn't very scientific. We were satisfied though.
Anyway, we found that the Quad versions of Mogami and Canare sounded better than the regular one pair stuff.
We also found that Monster Studio Pro 1000 smoked all their asses!
We have a couple of Mogami TRS patch cables in both quad and regular. You can actually hear a tad bit of difference between them, even at line level.
We did find that Canare sounded better than your run of the mill Whirlwind/ProCo cables did! So, Canare WILL sound better than cheap cables, but we both agreed that out of the "good" cable selections, it actually was the worse sounding. Very plain and average, where Mogami just had a clearer sound! Belden 8451 also proved to be a great sounding wire too! Right in there with Mogami.
Stay away from the "silver" wire stuff. We tried the Sundholm Acoustics "silver" wire, and it didn't sound ANY better than the Canare stuff. The price directly from Sundholm would have been $80 for a 20' mic cable. What a joke that was!
