Suck 'em and see!
I think the lead guitar might need some automation in places...it's the one on the left. Apart from that I'm quite happy with it. Any thoughts?

Soul Circus - Hard Times

Drums sound pretty good, voice tends to being a bit too in front and on top of everything. The rythm guitar sounds a bit muddy to me. Lead guitarrist is...well, a bit limited.

I actually thought the vox sounded ok.

The lead guitar is pretty underwhelming. There were definitely times when it was too loud, such as the build before the solo. (The solo itsself was decent though.)

Overall, the mix is pretty good.

I've heard better drum mixes from you. These drums lack balls. The kick is thin and hiding way down in the mix and the snare is the same. Not enough body in the snare. The kit as a whole seems buried. The left rhythm when everything drops out at 2:20 is way loud. The lead is a hair buried. I think it could come up a touch. Bass is kind of uninspiring, but it's present. Vocals sit okay with me, but they just don't sound good. Just a few tweaks here and there and I think it'll be ready.

Sounds like a great song to me! Vocals were slightly too dry for my taste. Guitars were really piercing... They need to be fuller. I'd track the distorted guitar a couple more times with more low-end.

Drums are a bit buried.

I really enjoy the concept of the song, though! Keep at it.

I like the vocals as well, except the first phrase, bit too "on top", and the part just before the solo ("I keep falling", and just before that). I think the rhythm guitar is a bit too, hmm, smeared out soundwise? I guess the parlance is "lacks definition". Bit more crunch. No qualms about the solo, that part I find sounds really good. I'll give it another listen in the morning though, have to listen with headphones and I'm almost deaf on the left side. Cool stuff, unpretentious and enthusing.

When the guitars started up I thought this was a cover of "Everybody wants you" by Billy Squier..lol

Is that a real drummer or software? sounds pretty mechanical.. Guitar on the left does come in a bit strong, I think the performances are all there, just needs some mix tweaks...

The song is now stuck in my head so I think that's a good thing.. :D

Thanks for all the comments.

This was another "I'll track one of your songs for free for future business" - worked out well as they have booked a couple of weekends.

All comments on board I have a second mix that addresses most of the issues I think.

Couple of points being made about the drums, is it a machine/software, they are too burried. It's a real drummer, he's just not a "great drummer" and asked for the drums to be further back in the mix. Maybe they come through more with this mix, thanks again for all the pointers

HARD TIMES MIX 2

Most of it seems better. The drums are still really thin and the cymbals are bordering on harsh and tinny.

I agree Greg, We have a tama swingstar kit here in the studio that's probably been used on other recordings of mine you've heard. The guy had a really limp sounding snare he insisted on using along with his own brass. If it was a paying gig I'd have spent a lot more time on mic placement at the start of the session and a lot more on mixing at the end. This was all done in 3 hours from setup to mix, and the second mix getting another hour of my time. Just for the sake of this thread I'm willing to go back and see if I can beef the drums up a bit more. I think it's a pretty good song, there's some weak elements in the band I was recording that I've tried to take the focus off. Client wants to hear a good song, homerec'rs want to hear a perfect mix. At the end of the day I've scored a couple of paying sessions from them, thats what I set out to do.

But hey...I'll see it through, expect another mix up probably after the weekend when I have some spare time.

final final mix with chunkier drums

Comparing to the first mix, what's so different about the drums?

I think I'm hearing more lows in the kick and more low-mids in the snare (more body to it now).. Aside from that I don't hear a lot of change.
