Ok, i understand latency pretty well, i was hoping someone will know the answer to this question:

What is the minimum speed processor needed for "0" latency?

heres the deal, i have a fast pc that gives me "0" latency on an amd 1.33mhz
processor. now that pc has to go in the family room and out of the studio as per my own wishes. I have a P3 400 mhz processor pc that i am configuring to run only in the studio, no internet, no games, nothing but Win2000 and cubase. will this give me the "0" latency that i require? I have 6 pc's now, i dont NEED to buy another one, dont want to buy another one. just want to be able to incorporate what i already have, and was wondering if anybody out there ever heard of a minimum requirement for great latency!
Thanks

There is no such thing as 0 latency (short of direct monitoring) and the 400 might run VST32 at best (forget about sx, find some OLD software)

i get about 10ms with my 2.4ghz... of course thats 8-in 4-out ...
i really dont know about your "0" latency...

my 450 did fine with cubaseVST32, but i still had a bit of latency... are you only running 1 or 2 in? ...

upgrading to xp-pro also helped my 450mhz be a bit quicker.. you might want to give that a shot...

personally, id try to sell the pc's you have (extra ones at least), and upgrade your motherboard and chip, just keep your drives, case, and ps ...

you should be able to get a 2ghz, pretty reasonably

your P3's still have value. but you wont get much for them. I kow there are lots of people willing to pay about $100 for a used PC. So 6 PC's can rake in some $550 or so. So you can put that down for a newer one.

Latency doesn't have nearly as much to do with your actuall processor as a lot of people think. Also, many people here misreport and/or offer up misleading statements concerning your latency. You can't achieve a 0 latency yet unless you are hardware monitoring, which means you also can't hear anything processed. I hear all the time people talking about their systems running at like 1.5ms of latency with no glitches. I have yet to see a system that runs that low of a latency without problems when recording 16+ tracks of 24 bit 44.1 khz. The best way to find out your answers is to set up your software and give it some trial runs:)
