Latency/Routing in Firestudio with Garageband

Hi,
I've set up my Firestudio audio interface on my Mac Pro, and have set up the System Preferences in the Mac, and the audio Input and Output under Garageband 3's 'Sound' tab of the program's Preferences.

However, in my headphones - even without reverb or anything - I'm hearing a kind of doubling in my headphones. Is this a kind of latency, caused by some routing that I could avoid? Can I just go through the Firestudio, in terms of routing the signal, instead of going through garageband?

Also, I don't know how to get at the Firestudio's internal (software) mixer. I'd like to be able to do this because I'd like to route my microphone input to different tracks, rather than having to physically pull it out of one input and put it into another (e.g., I only seem to be able to record on track 2 in garageband by plugging the mic. into input 2 on the Firestudio).

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

With the track selected, in track info, you can choose which presonus input you want. You have to unselect the record button on the first track to allow you to activate the input on another track. If you search in the help menu, you can find some helpful hints on eliminating latency . I havnt had too much trouble with latency since I started using garageband more often. The mac actually adapts to you and how you use it.

I didn't quite understand what you said at first, but then went to the Mac and realized that you can keep the same input and send it to a different track.

Very neat.

And I'm impressed to see that one can do 'ducking' in garageband.

Hi genesisariana,
just wanted to check; do you use the firestudio control console at all?

In the post above, I was referring to my use without the console - i just choose the input in GB and go from there.

If you use the cc, how do you go about, say, using a mic. in the firestudio's mic. 1 input, and then route it to get it into and out of GB? I'm totally confused by the firestudio cc, and cannot find anything that helps - the videos on youtube and few postings that I have found about routing (even on the presonus forums) are confusing for me.

Ducking is basically selective compression. The most obvious, irritating, example is on the news where you'll see a reporter standing in a noisy environment, and the background sound will be diminshed when they're speaking into the microphone. After they finish speaking, the background noise will increase again.

If ducking is used well, it can be a creative tool but if it's done badly it can sound like a pumping of the sound between loud and quiet.
