Latency... again

Why is it when I use my softsynth as a stand alone I can get very low latency (I can set it for 1ms), but when I try as a plug-in in Sonar2 I can't get no lower than 10ms? I figure I am using the same drivers and soundcard, so what's the deal?

Equipment:
ASUS A7V333 mobo
AMD Athlon 1800XP
WinXP
256MB DDR 2700 333Mhz ram
Lounge Lizard is the softsynth

It's because there is inherent latency in the manner in which a plug-in can be communicated with by its host. Commands and messages which previously went straight to the softsynth's engine now have to go through the Sonar layer as well, and the audio is routed into Sonar's engine before playing back as well.

10 ms is pretty darn low...

There may be another explanation. Supposing your soundcard has good ASIO drivers (which Sonar doesn't support). Then you can get very low latency with ASIO and higher latency with WDM.

What soundcard do you have? It's the most important part of your setup, you know... ;)

I forgot to mention my soundcard... SoundBlaster Live! Platinum... I can't set it to lower than 10ms in Sonar...

Thats because Creative's drivers suck. Try dloading the KX project drivers or do yourself a favor and buy something like a Audiophile 2496.

How much lower do the kX drivers lower latency?
